talk me into/out of getting a 2015 Gibson firebird over a Gibson SG

Re: talk me into/out of getting a 2015 Gibson firebird over a Gibson SG

If you went used, you could come pretty close to getting both for the price of one new, give or take a couple hundred. Especially if you went a little cheaper on the SG side, maybe a faded.

The Fadeds are absolutely fine guitars, especially for that price range.

However, if you're really gassing for a Firebird, get one. You can always get an SG later (I doubt Gibson's gonna stop making them anytime soon).

Furthermore, most retailers will allow you to return the guitar if you don't gel with it and if you don't, then get the SG.

aww man just when i thought id made a decision.

has anyone tried the new 2016 T firebirds? how do they compare with a 2015 V?

the 2016 are out of stock, would it be worth the wait and couple of hundred saved? or is the 2015 V worth the extra money? or is a hardcase the only extra id be getting?

Correction: the Firebird has both.

I do not dispute this. I am just trying to understand what it is that the OP seeks in the 'bird (and, for that matter, the SG).

My earlier suggestion of the Firebird Studio might prove to be a compromise too far. This model does not have an especially good reputation. Perhaps, I should withdraw it? Perhaps, Gibson offers an SG with Firebird style pickups?

The only valid test is for the OP to trawl guitar shops and test drive a few things.

1. Stop this pondering and calculating as if your were to choose a company car.
2. Listen to your heart. No one's supposed to know better what you really want.
3. Listen to Boogie Bill. Air filled guitars are a different breed entirely.

ok i definitely want a firebird, its calling to me, should i go for the firebird V or the cheaper firebird T ? what are the main differences? they seem really similar on paper

If you're going to buy a Gibson at leas try a 335 before you make a decision, IMO they're the best gibson you can get, infinitel more versatile & better sounding

I'd LOVE a gibson 335! I have 2 epiphones (a 90's sheraton II and a recent 355) but gibsons are at least two or three times more expensive than a firebird or sg! definitely in the future though I'd like to have one of each. basically this thread is which should i buy first, and what can wait.

Re: talk me into/out of getting a 2015 Gibson firebird over a Gibson SG

is lack of quality control still an issue at gibson? :/
It's vastly overblown on the internet. Sure, you can find a flaw on most guitars if you look hard enough, but finish flaws are to be expected when using nitro. It's really hard to work with and not very forgiving. However, the purists demand that they use it. As for most other "flaws" that I see people talk about, the vast majority are really preferences and not actual problems. I have a Traditional Pro Les Paul that I absolutely love but I had the nut replaced. I took it to a pro tech (seriously, the guy is local but does amazing work for names you would recognize) and his first nut had the exact same issue that I didn't like with the factory nut. So, I had him replace it again and change the spacing. The original Gibson nut was done well, no snagging or pinching, I just didn't like the spacing.

my 2011 LP 60's tribute definitely has a more rushed and sloppy feel to it compared to my 2006 Lp special DC with similar specs, which feels rock solid just a better build in general. I can't imagine production changing that much in 5 years, seems more like luck of the draw.
both of those are lower end gibsons so I don't know how the quality inconsistency compares with higher priced models.

TBH id love both, but the firebird is calling out to me more than an sg, but i think i'd use a guitar with full sized humbuckers more in general.
maybe i should hold off until i can play them both.
There will be more inconsistency at the lower price points, they use the best wood for the higher priced models and the rest is used on the lower end models. The "bad" ones are usually still well made, they are just more likely to be missing something in terms of tone or feel. I'm a big believer in playing whatever you buy but I have been surprised by the Gibsons that I decided to buy blindly. They have been excellent guitars. A guitar that you love to play is going to get the most use. You will build your tones around it and you will be more creative with it.

I'm not reading the other posts but just get the normal, traditional firebird

I have one and it rips and I love it

post pics when you buy it

Re: talk me into/out of getting a 2015 Gibson firebird over a Gibson SG

I wanted a Firebird for years, and one day on my to vacation in Nashville (and a mini guitar safari), my wife and I took a quick break for lunch in Louisville and wandered into the GC near St. Matthews. They had a (barely) used firebird studio faded with a satin finish and mini humbuckers on the wall for $599 and I walked out of there with complete with tax for $500. Now, it's not what I was after in that guitar, but fun to play and everyone compliments me on its tone every time I play it out.

All of this to say... Life's short, get the firebird.

Re: talk me into/out of getting a 2015 Gibson firebird over a Gibson SG

Around here, the majority of the LPs and SGs in stock have pretty bad fretwork. Especially considering the price, they should be able to dress the frets at least as well as the Epiphone equivalents. That can certainly be fixed, but I don't like the idea of paying $2000+ for a guitar that needs to be touched up by someone who knows what they're doing. I suspect that most of the real gems get picked out before they hit the sales floor. Employees or friends of employees getting first pick.

The only Gibsons these days that seem like consistently great guitars for the money are the weird models. If it isn't an LP or SG, it is automatically much more difficult to sell, so it's priced accordingly. The two best Gibsons I've run across in the last few years were a Nighthawk and a Grace Potter signature V. Both at or around $1000, and they played flawlessly. I'm still kicking myself for not picking up that Nighthawk.

So, my vote is Firebird, unless you just run across a great example of an SG that isn't priced outrageously.

Can we, for the moment, assume that he has not. (Saturday morning would be a good time for a UK-based working person to visit guitar shops.)

For me, the telling phrase in the opening post is "wanted ... all my life". This implies zero hands-on experience of the model on which to base any opinion.

Geez, I hope he's played some.
