Talk me out of a Trace Elliot Velocette

If you all remember from the 5E3 speaker thread, I was very close to ordering a 5E3 clone from Li'l Dawg. However, after pondering it more, the wait time (although I'm sure normal for most custom builder) wouldn't "work" seeing as how I'd have to sell the one amp I own to pay for it. So...

After looking on here and snooping the interweb, I've been considering a Trace Elliot Velocette. I need something with not so much wattage in a relatively compact package. I wanted single channel as I intend to use some pedals for harder dirt. From what it seems like, it'll be perfect for me. Plus, it's not ugly!

I know Gearjoneser is in love with his Goldtone which is apparently the same thing (more or less) as the Traces, and I know Skarekrough has owned a few. Anyone wanna give some input (especially guys that have owned/do own it/or similar, like GJ and Skarekrough)?

THANKS!

I can't talk you out of it. It's a great amp. I love them. They sound great with extension cabs, and they totally have the tone. They are little tone machines. If you're using various grit boxes in front of it, it's a great box at lower volumes. If you totally crank it, then the Velocette tone will take over. You can still use OD and boost boxes, but when that whole amp is raging, it's very much making it's own tone, and it's best to just let it go. :burnout:

No can do.....fantastic amps. Just a great little tone monster in a small package that's WAY louder than it looks.

I have a modded SD-1 in front of mine and slide it to 6 watts for home use. All it takes is a switch to 15 for gigs and loud rehearsals.

The thing's a keeper....total "British" tone.

Re: Talk me out of a Trace Elliot Velocette

I think they're one of the best EL-84 amps you can buy at any price, and luckily, they aren't overly expensive. I'm digging mine and like it because it really lets guitars sound like themselves. No matter what I plug into it, I almost don't even need to touch the tone knob on the amp. It's literally a 'plug in and play' amp that bridges the gap between Vox and Marshall. It's not a highgain amp, but it's natural tone is the edge of breakup with a British flavor.

Didn't even catch the fact that it had a 6-watt switch...sold!

Thanks fellas, now I just need to find one for the right price at the right time.

Good luck hunting....

I looked for a year or two for one with reverb. Auctions for them ended way more than I really wanted to pay for it. I got lucky and saw a guy close to me was selling it and worked a deal in person. Never underestimate the power of slapping down greenbacks into someones hands on a deal; it's powerful stuff.

They're out there though.....

Re: Talk me out of a Trace Elliot Velocette

Even though I got the 30W 2-12 Goldtone, I'm still keeping my eyes open for the Goldtone 15RV. The 30 is very loud, but the tone is killer. I'd like to have the same thing at lower volume.

The cool thing about Goldtones and Velocettes is that the controls and circuits are simple, but the added features like channel switching, FX loop, bright switch, and extension spkr jack, make the amp very useable as a main gigging amp. I've read that some people control the overall volume by inserting a volume pedal in the FX loop. I may need to try that sometime.

Re: Talk me out of a Trace Elliot Velocette

I LOVE my Goldtone GA15-RV!!!

Anyway, are you looking for a Velocette with reverb?
Also what speaker size? A local store here has one that I was eyeing. It's Green and has been recently serviced. I personally haven't played thru it yet though.

I *think* from a quick look at it a few weeks ago that it's the 10'' speaker and that it doesn't have reverb.

Let me know if your interested and I'll send you a link. Persoanlly, I think the shop owner wants a little much for it. $399. I see 'em going on The Gear Page Emporiums for around $350 quite often. Cool looking little amp though. I'm still thinking about it for myself. I just can't justify buying another amp which is pretty much the same as one I already have.

The ones with the 10" speaker didn't have reverb.

At least the ones I've seen.

Re: Talk me out of a Trace Elliot Velocette

yeah, my recollective memory is saying that it only had tone and volume knobs on the back. :smack:

The 10" amp is also almost 1/3 smaller than the 12" speakered amp.
