I'm looking for a guitar to replace my SG. I really dig the sound of mahogany guitars with PAFish bridge pickups, and I'm looking for a guitar that can be used for roots-rock to metal (yep, a pretty broad range, roughly Son Volt to UFO/Sabbath).
So, what's wrong with my SG? First, it doesn't sustain worth a crap compared to my other guitars. I know that this can be a problem with SGs, as their bodies are relatively thin and their necks flexible and poorly supported. My second problem is tuning stability. No matter how many nuts I've cut (I've even tried graphtech), I have stability problems. I think that's due to the flexible neck in combination with the LP headstock.
So, I've come to the conclusion that the things I don't like about my SG are due to fundamental design flaws. But, I like the basic tone of the instrument (it could be hair thicker). That is what had me thinking about a V. The neck is better supported than the SG, and the headstock has a relatively straight pull. Plus, they look cool. My only problem is that Vs come with 500t pickups, and since I'd have to replace the pickup with something in the PAF range, any V I played in a store wouldn't be representative of the final product.
So, any reasons I shouldn't replace my SG with a V?
