Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

I'm looking for a guitar to replace my SG. I really dig the sound of mahogany guitars with PAFish bridge pickups, and I'm looking for a guitar that can be used for roots-rock to metal (yep, a pretty broad range, roughly Son Volt to UFO/Sabbath).

So, what's wrong with my SG? First, it doesn't sustain worth a crap compared to my other guitars. I know that this can be a problem with SGs, as their bodies are relatively thin and their necks flexible and poorly supported. My second problem is tuning stability. No matter how many nuts I've cut (I've even tried graphtech), I have stability problems. I think that's due to the flexible neck in combination with the LP headstock.

So, I've come to the conclusion that the things I don't like about my SG are due to fundamental design flaws. But, I like the basic tone of the instrument (it could be hair thicker). That is what had me thinking about a V. The neck is better supported than the SG, and the headstock has a relatively straight pull. Plus, they look cool. My only problem is that Vs come with 500t pickups, and since I'd have to replace the pickup with something in the PAF range, any V I played in a store wouldn't be representative of the final product.

So, any reasons I shouldn't replace my SG with a V?

This is true, but if you play it acoustically and find a lively, resonant guitar with qualities you know you like (wood type, scale length, etc) then pickups really become a matter of preference. You can tell a LOT about an electric guitar by playing unplugged, in fact I usually never plug in at stores.

Okay, I'll give it my best shot.

Why would you want to shy away from a guitar which is powerful on so many levels.

Why would you want a guitar thats visual style represents "grab you by the balls" rock like no other guitar can?

Why would you want a guitar that sports superior ergonomics that allows for great playability and which is also aesthetically pleasing?

Why would you want a guitar that generally has a tonal emphasis on the mid-range frequencies, making it a no brainer in a rock band format?

Why would you want anything that Michael Schenker would play?

How'd I go?

I like Flying V's and all other things being equal, I think they sound better than SG's. Can't play them sitting down though...not easily anyway. Also, unless you dress really cool, the guitar will look cooler than you do! (laugh!) Lew

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

I wish Flying Vs were easier to play when seated. I've always wanted one, but they just don't seem practical for me.

I ain't gonna talk you out of buying one, but I might try to talk you into to buying me one. ;)

Your Point Being? (O'Neal voice).

Nothing wrong with a V. Personally, I'd take my SG to the Guitar Doc and get it re-setup.

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

Aint nothing wrong with the setup of the SG (believe me, I know how to setup a guitar from scratch).

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

Personally, I like SG's more than V's - but thats just a personal preferance tho. I don't know why, but V's just aren;t my cup o tea...

But I love SG's, I think they're one of the best guitars out there. I've got 3 of them and don't have any of the stability problems you listed here.

personally, i'd choose an explorer over a V any day...

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

ok, in ANY other circumstance the only thing I would have 2 say is "NECK-DIVE!"...but since it's replacing an SG...it's not much better:D

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

neck dive? are you serious? maybe if you hang your whiskey bottle from the headstock...a good gibson or jackson v are the only v's i've encountered that DIDNT have neck dive. epiphone did bigger than sheee-it. well, my dillion v doesnt, but thats because its acryllic and the body is as heavy as an LP

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

Both guitars rock... but I don't know about any of the problems that you are having with your SG... probably you need locking tuners... and Tone Pros TOM bridge to be have the stability...

I love my SG.. and that guitar kills... I never have problems tuning wise.. I only have the sketchy tuning thing with excessive Bigsby abuse...

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

ok , V is the roman numeral for 5 , and SG stands for several grand
what would you rather have? 5 bucks or several grand ?

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

I love playing my son's Epi V. It has neck dive syndrome, but I think that's down to the woods used on the Epi.

Unbeatable top fret access, killer rock tone and it looks like you mean business.

Only you can rock me, rock me. Come on back now do it again! :fest7:
