Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

Both guitars rock... but I don't know about any of the problems that you are having with your SG... probably you need locking tuners... and Tone Pros TOM bridge to be have the stability...

I've got some Tonepros/Kluson locking tuners.

Maybe I've just got a dud. Like the tone, hate the lack of tuning stability and wish it had more sustain.

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

Sorry, but I can't think of a reason for not getting a V. I really want one myself. Thanks for the GAS! :laugh2:

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

Okay, I'll give it my best shot.
...
Why would you want anything that Michael Schenker would play?

How'd I go?

Not bad. I had a listen to "Stranger in the Night" and turned off the left speaker, in the hopes that I could get a good listen of Schenker's V. Unfortuntately, he always has that cocked-wah sound. Is that the way a V always sounds, or is that just Schenker through his 50-watter with a wah?

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

neck dive? are you serious? maybe if you hang your whiskey bottle from the headstock...a good gibson or jackson v are the only v's i've encountered that DIDNT have neck dive. epiphone did bigger than sheee-it. well, my dillion v doesnt, but thats because its acryllic and the body is as heavy as an LP

That's not what neck dive means.

Neck dive means to grab the back of the neck and the face of the guitar and push on the back of the neck to drop the note in pitch.

Basically a dive bomb.

is that bad for the neck?

Sounds like an easy way to ruin the neck on a perfectly good SG...

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

I think even my Tele looks cooler than I do :( :omg:

I like Flying V's and all other things being equal, I think they sound better than SG's. Can't play them sitting down though...not easily anyway. Also, unless you dress really cool, the guitar will look cooler than you do! (laugh!) Lew

+1

Thats always been my issue with people playing v's. If your a great player, and regularly play solo's/leads, then a V only helps ya look kooler. But if your Not a great player, or even mediocre, or just don't play solo's/leads very often, AND your playing a V. It'll just make ya look like a poser.
Walk on stage with a V or Explorer, or any pointy guitar really. And people are automatically gonna assume you are gonna shred your ass off. In most peoples heads Pointy guitars = Awesome guitarist. So unless you have the chops to back it up, your gonna end up looking like a dip****. They're gonna have higher expectations Of someone playing a V/Explorer/pointy guitars, than they'll have of a guy just playing a SG/Tele/Strat/etc...

So I say, if ya wanna play a flashy guitar, Then ya BETTER have Flashy chops to back it up.

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

I had a Gibby "V' for about four months. It sounded great but it just didn't feel comfortable either standing or the near impossible sitting position. They are quite heavy too.

Can't imagine why you wouldn't be happy with an SG. You say it's unstable... have you had the bridge and tailpiece looked at by a pro? Tuners???? How old are they? A few minor changes on the SG may make your life a whole lot easier.

What year is the SG?

I think an SG is a much more versatile and better looking guitar than a "V"

There, now the thread is complete. :D

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

I HATE Flying Vs. They look bloody awful, are horrible sounding, completely overrated, ugly headstock, uncomfy Gibson neck/scale legnth, just a complete disaster. You don't want a V, you want a Fender Jaguar!!!!

It's a 2004. Tuners are Kluson locking, and nut is graphtech. Keep in mind that one person's unstable is another person's, um, not unstable. That is, maybe the guitar is not as unstable as I make it out to be, I'm just sensitive to tuning issues (or maybe it really is unstable).

The big problem is the binding at the nut. I opened up the stock nut with a set of nut files, slathered it with nut sauce, and I still had tuning issues (binding). I then tried a graphtech I had sitting around. Much better, but still some issues with the middle strings. Throw in the flexible neck, and I find the tuning annoying. In comparison, my PRS Soapbar SE is rock solid.

I'm also disappointed in the sustain. I new going into it that SGs don't have the greatest sustain.

Don't get me wrong: I love the tone. I even like the stock pickups: to me the stock 490t sounded better than the Seth Lover bridge I temporarilly replaced it with (the 490r neck was crap, so the Seth neck stayed, but the magnet was replaced with an A5).

Re: Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

Hmmm trying to find a tactful way of saying this...

If you aren't under 30, tall and thin, with long flowing hair and tattoos, playing metal, YOU WILL LOOK LIKE A DORK WITH A FLYING V.

Does that help? ROFL

If you think the SG's neck is weak and flexible, what makes you think the V's neck won't be the same, if not worse? Maybe you should be thinking Les Paul...
