It's a 2004. Tuners are Kluson locking, and nut is graphtech. Keep in mind that one person's unstable is another person's, um, not unstable. That is, maybe the guitar is not as unstable as I make it out to be, I'm just sensitive to tuning issues (or maybe it really is unstable).
The big problem is the binding at the nut. I opened up the stock nut with a set of nut files, slathered it with nut sauce, and I still had tuning issues (binding). I then tried a graphtech I had sitting around. Much better, but still some issues with the middle strings. Throw in the flexible neck, and I find the tuning annoying. In comparison, my PRS Soapbar SE is rock solid.
I'm also disappointed in the sustain. I new going into it that SGs don't have the greatest sustain.
Don't get me wrong: I love the tone. I even like the stock pickups: to me the stock 490t sounded better than the Seth Lover bridge I temporarilly replaced it with (the 490r neck was crap, so the Seth neck stayed, but the magnet was replaced with an A5).
