Talk to me about 15" guitar speakers.

Re: Talk to me about 15" guitar speakers.

If Ralph Macchio had used a 15, he would have beaten Steve Vai in one round.

Re: Talk to me about 15" guitar speakers.

And he would have done it playing blues rather than shredding.

I was thinking he could have shredded the blues instead of just playing Paganini.

Re: Talk to me about 15" guitar speakers.

I went through boatloads of speakers in some late 50s tweed Pro's I was using. I managed to find some 70s Celestion gtr 15" speakers, a G15-75 and a G15-80. Best sounding gtr 15" speakers I ever used. The EV is great, but a little bit of overkill for <50 watt combos. I had an EVM 15L in a Music Man 100 watt combo amp that ate Marshalls for breakfast.

Indeed. Like that scene at the end of the Karate Kid, where instead of throwing the Crane Kick, he just kicked the other dude in the nuts and ran away... [emoji1]

Re: Talk to me about 15" guitar speakers.

For some reason, I have a wild hair up my butt to build a 115 cab. I'm looking at the Eminence Big Ben. Or maybe, a Legend 1518. I suspect a 15 incher might be a bit smoother and more mellow because of the higher mass cone. So who uses 15" speakers? Thoughts? :)

Artie

P.S. Closed or open back cab?

Slightly OT @

Have you seen the Johan Segeborn (youtube) clip(s) where he demo's an 18 inch monster.
I really liked that sound/tone.
Saying that, i have NO idea who makes a decent 18 incher for guitar these days ?

Re: Talk to me about 15" guitar speakers.

Hello, this is FluxTone Speakers. We have several 15 inch guitar speakers that may help you with your interest in such. We have patented, and build, the most transparent kind of "Guitar Attenuator".

Actually it is not like any other kind of attenuator ever built or marketed. We do not adjust, load down, manipulate, employ resistors, or in anyway fiddle with the original signal coming from your amp! All of the power coming from your amp still goes non-stop directly to your speakers voice coil. We merely adjust how strong the magnet is on the back of the speaker...that in turn adjusts how far the speaker cone moves...thereby regulates how loud the speaker is without affecting your amps touch, tone, or playability. This gives you a 25dB range of control over the SPL of that speaker. Compare that to some amplifiers that have a "half Power" switch on the back...that is only a 3dB change in volume.

We use the original "cone assemblies" from the respective manufactures, that way our speakers sound, and react exactly like the originals.

We have cones from Eminence, Leslie, EV, and others for our 15" line. Here is a video of Justin Derrico in our amp room...about half way through he plays an amp called Big Joe....it is connected to a pair if our EVM 15L's...that may give you an idea of how a 15 sounds compared to a 12. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0NG2Z8PcPo&t=21s

I hope this brings you some ideas, I will try to attach some photos and links...

Sorry, I don't have $1425 in the budget for another amp let alone a single replacement speacker.

Re: Talk to me about 15" guitar speakers.

Inspired by a Marshall 2054, I built an oversized road-proof 1x15" guitar cab, housing an old Celestion G15B-100, 20 years ago or so. I called him Cyclopse and toured with it during the 2000s. It sounded quite nice and open and not overbassy at all for a 1x15", actually my other 4x12" cab flapped the pants more. I liked it quite much. My spine didn't so I gave it to a friend around 2010 and started playing doormats onstage.

Eminence sells the same thing (a speaker with built-in attenuation) for like 2 hundred bucks or so

Re: Talk to me about 15" guitar speakers.

I use a Mesa Diesel 1x15 closed back with a EVM15L for guitar and love it. I use it with a Mesa Mark III combo paired with a EVM12L or alone with a Peavey 5150. Look at the speaker specs of a 12L vs 15L and that might help you make a decision.

Re: Talk to me about 15" guitar speakers.

Just one tiny problem: wattage rating disappoints... if it was 150w, or at least 120w, it'd be another story

I used it with my 100w Marshall with no issues whatsoever. I had my 4x12 on one side and the 15 on the other. It sounds glorious but it is a bit too much to drag to gigs. Right now I am using it with my Peavey Classic 20h. Once again I am thrilled with the results.

Re: Talk to me about 15" guitar speakers.

15s are cool for smooth buttery cleans in my experience -but are inferior to 10s and 12s for punch, drive, accuracy.

So jazz is an awesome place to use them.
