Talk to me About Mesa Boogie Rectifier amps

WITH FULL DISTORTION

F. Hails Railsologist
Hey Guys, Hows it going?
im currently using an EVH 5150 III 50w head. but not quite happy with it.Thats the reason im considering getting a DUAL RECT. solo head.

I ve only tried the Recto Roadster head. but didnt like it.
Do the dual rectifier SOLO Head, the 3 channels, has MORE Gain than the Rectoverb, Roadking, And Roadster?!
or do all of them have the same amount of gain/distortion?!?! and does the tone differ among these models?!

Thank you very much for the infos in ADVANCE.
JP

PS - Im asking that becasue im considering getting a Mesa dual rect solo head.

Re: Talk to me About Mesa Boogie Rectifier amps

Did you try different cabs by any chance?
Sometimes that's at fault more than anything else.

The gain in all of them is about the same. If there is a difference it's likely due to the preamp tubes. If you're looking for more gain because a Recto isn't as compressed as the 5150 you're not going to find it without boosting it. The relative lack of compression is part of its sound, but it can make them more difficult to play if you're used to them. They reward having a sledgehammer for a right hand.

The Roadster and Rectoverb tend to be darker, probably do to the additional circuitry from the reverb tank. Regular Rectos tend to be brighter. 50w models are a bit more midrangy without the low end depth of the 100w or 150w models. I've never played a 3 channel or a 25w model and can't comment on them beyond saying that they're generally brighter than the 2 channels.

I find Rectos sound a little dull if they have all stock JJs preamp tubes. Putting a Tung Sol or EHX in the V1 position opens it up the top end a bit.

HUmmmmm the reason im switching between the 5150 and theolde mesa is the TONE Itself. i preffer bolder and darker tones, as well as the crunchy and tight tones.
Q: )
but thank you for the information man
i appreaciate.
do you have the a mesa amp yourself?

Re: Talk to me About Mesa Boogie Rectifier amps

The stuff above is on the money. However before you spend that much $ you should also play a Bogner Uberschall.

It's the only metal amp that I think may have better tone than my triple rec. does in a no pedal showdown. It wasn't by much but it's enough to tell if you're used to playing a boogie. The sound clips on the net won't be able to audibly represent the difference correctly. Go play them both and you'll know for sure what YOU like more.

I know a lot of people who have used Mesa amps but I don't know anybody who "settled" on one. Get a VHT or a Soldano or a Bogner.

Re: Talk to me About Mesa Boogie Rectifier amps

I still have and still use my DR and for good reason.

Because it's harder to get a good amp down unda? :smokin:

The Dual Rec is a classic sound... but there is a lot of competition in the market these days.

Sometimes that classic sound is exactly what is needed. I have made modifications to mine. It doesn't change it from sounding like a DR, it just sounds better without having to run any boxes or effects.

Re: Talk to me About Mesa Boogie Rectifier amps

Re: Talk to me About Mesa Boogie Rectifier amps

SO, all these mesas : the Dual rectifier solo head, the dual tremoverb, the dual roadster, or the dual road king .. WHich ones has MORE distortion, tighter bass and darker sound?

Re: Talk to me About Mesa Boogie Rectifier amps

The Roadster/Road King have about the same gain as the Solo, but because they are some what darker sounding they seem smoother. The Roadster and Road King use the same preamp, but the roadster lacks the Progression Linkage feature where you cane select the different power tube combinations for each channel. Using a combination of 6l6s and El34s in the RK will tighten up the lowend. Overall IMO the Road King is the way to go, it is an extremely versatile amp.

MORE distortion - None. They're all more or less the same. If you want MORE, the answer is to boost with the Maxon OD808.

tighter bass - Triple Rectifier. Recommend the newer Multi-Watt version. Combine it with the OD808 for even more tightness.

darker sound - "Darker" in Recto speak usually means smoother and they're usually favoured by rock players. Brighter usually means more aggressive and they're usually favoured by metal players.

You sure you want darker?

I agree with pretty much everything you have said in this topic about the Rectos. I owned an early two-channel DR and have a Single and Roadster now.
