Talking about the Boss DS-1

Re: Talking about the Boss DS-1

Basically, when I get signed and like totally go platinum, and like Ibanez will ask me to indorse a product or whatever, I will totally tell them that my sig TS9 would have to be like a total copy of my Spina Mod TS9 and that they like send 50% of my cut.

Thanks forum brother.I appreciate that alot! :yourock: :beerchug:

Re: Talking about the Boss DS-1

I pulled my DS-1 out of the box last night and tweaked it some more. Many of the original changes I made were same value, just better caps. So, I went backwards and put the stock caps back in - a couple back to stock values, changed a resistor back to stock and added a small cap across the diodes. Now it sounds better than it did when I first modded it. I'm not a fan of it in stock form, but with a few mods it is useable to me.

Erik....You should see the insides of one of my modded DS1s....:biglaugh:

Not one electrolytic cap I bet....LOL, 5% resistors and no silver mica's right? :biglaugh:

After looking over the schematic, I decided to leave a few of the caps with direct signal to the modded values and then see what happens with the stock part of the others. In several cases, I couldn't hear a difference between one or the other.

One thing I would like to do is take a little bit of the top out of the tone control. Haven't got that dialed in just yet. Any suggestions?

Absolutely buddy! Let me look at my schematic and mod photos and get back to you today on it..I'll PM you..

Thanks, bud. I did change R16 and C11. Those are in the tone circuit from what I can tell but my changes may not have changed it the way I'd like. It's still better than stock, but not quite there yet.

Those 2 values are stock on my mod sheet and schematics..You've got mail..

Re: Talking about the Boss DS-1

It's a great distortion for me, but I never turn the tone past 12 o'clock. Actually I only ever have it between 10 and 12 o'clock. I have the distortion anywhere between 12 and cranked, depending on what I'm playing.

Re: Talking about the Boss DS-1

Does anyone know what caps and/or resistors to change to add a bit more distortion (I heard it's done by lowering the R13's value) and more importantly, add more bass. I like using the pedal between 9 and 12 o'clock, but I'd like to be able to get more tones from it, and I feel by adding a bit more thump to the crunch I can get that. The fizziness that results after 12 o'clock is just annoying. Also how do I make the distortion a bit smoother?

I know this is asking a lot, and any help is appreciated.

Sorry if this is a hi-jack but I don't feel it's worthy of a separate thread seeing as 2 people will know the answers and that's all I'll need. Peace.

Re: Talking about the Boss DS-1

There's a few caps that can be changed to increase the bass response but I found that changing C5 and C13 had the best impact since they are right at the start and end of the meat and potatoes of the circuit. Some of the other caps are in the input/output buffers and are used to block unwanted current.

R13 is the resistor to lower to increase the distortion. Stock it is 4.7k. Try 2.2k to start and go from there.

A simple swap of one of the diodes can help too. Change D4 to a 1N4001. If you like assymetrical clipping vs. symetrical, add another 1N4001 in series with D5.

Thanks, I think I'll try the two caps and the resistor, and see how I like those. Any reccomended cap values for the C5 and C13? I'll probably get the solering expert I know to install them as I don't want to damage the PCB. Thanks again!!

0.1uf is what I put in those two spots. Change one of the diodes too. That will have a big impact on the clipping. Listen to it after the cap changes, then listen to it after the resistor change, then change D4 if you want to 1N4001, or even a red 3mm LED for more crunch.
