Tapping. I hate tapping

I was never really even into Van Halen cause i considered tapping a low art form. Now i'm not knocking Eddy-he did it first and thats great, and theres a lot of skill and everything involved in his work, but i still think its a gimmick for the most part-I mean, you dont see Clapton tapping, now do you? Now all my 35 years playing goes out the window when i hear some 19 year old a-hole whos been playing 12 months whos been into tapping and start tapping and thinking hes blowing me away with me doing fingers on note for note shredding. Its sickening but its a disiease that there really isnt any cure for.I hate to say it, but im learning tapping-it doesnt take that long, and its technically pretty easy compared to doing the real work across the fretboard I'm accustomed to-just to shut these punks up!

I tap, it ain't a gimmick for me. It kind of seems like a waste to worry about what someone else chooses to do with their musical whims. How does 35 years of your playing get tossed out by someone else who taps??

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

And here, my friends, is an example of playing guitar for the wrong reason!

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

For every EVH, RR or Jeff Watson who uses it to great effect, there's someone like George Lynch, or Paul Gilbert who totally ruins it by turning it into a boring shred scales up and down the neck exercise. :chairshot

I guess I'm a tapping snob, LOL. I totally tune out when people start tapping after about 5 seconds of it :snore:  And I have absolutely no desire to learn how to get really good at it.

I'll do some pick taps ala Paul Chapman , Randy, or Adrian Smith once in a while tho  Boring too I guess, but at least not monotonous :bigthumb:

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

There is a great band called Russian Circles from Chicago. They are fully instrumental, and use tapping in a more musical way. It doesn't sound like an exercise, and its not shredding. Check 'em out if you like it a bit left-field and avant garde.

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

I've never really understood or gotten into any tapping, shredding etc. I certainly can respect the technical skill it takes, and some guys even do make it pretty melodic and intresting, but still..... I just can't picture driving in the car listening to a shredder no matter how good. I can't picture being on the floor of a concert, beer in hand, hot and sweaty listening to a guy shredd or tap for 45 minutes straight.

I do think a nice solo has its place. Novemember Rain by GN'R without those awesome Slash solo's just wouldn't be the same song. A nice soulful singing solo like that though is worlds apart to me than having Marty Friedman throw some shredder stuff into that song. just wouldn't fit in the slightest know what I mean.

I guess I'm just usually more impressed at what guys don't play rather than how many notes they can crank out per minute. Keith Richards is a fine example of waht I'm talking about. His stuff always sounds great and fits the track but its nothing technically difficult. He's simply doing what works best instead of what might impress and that to me is as difficult skill for many guitarist to master as is doing some crazy interval octave tapping stuff.

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

tapping must be one of the most bashed techinques in guitar playing ever

obviously there isn't one kind of tapping, and as mentioned above, styles such as 8 fingered tapping are not rudimentary techniques..

it's all about how the guitarist uses it. am i going to bash a player just because he fingertaps a lot? No, if he's good, he's good.

you use fingertapping when you need to/want to. sometimes it can be useful for those wide stretches that your fingering hand can't handle..

it's just a tool (like many others) to spice up, improve, and broaden your playing..

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

I will tap occasionally. It can really spice up a sweep arpeggio lick. But Hyper-Speed shredding all the time gets boring to me. Occasionally, a solo should compliment the music it's being played over.:27:

But, sometimes, I will have a double-bass 16th note riff at 210 bpm running through my head. It's hard to play slow with that going on.:scared:

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

I like how Zakk Wylde taps and mixes it in with bends to simulate dive bombs. That's killer.

I don't tap near as much now as I used to. I still like to and will when the moment calls for it but it's not something I have to do. I like tapped harmonics too. They're all over the fretboard.

There's tasteful tapping, and then there's stupid human tricks on guitar. EVH = tasteful tapping. Michaelangelo whatever his name is = stupid human tricks on guitar.

;)

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

What exactly does a 19 year old doing some fret-tapping have to do with you? Sounds like somebody might have a case of the pissenmoans.

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

Just watch a video of Buckethead.

Even if the 19-year-old thought he was the **** tapping at you, is it that big a deal to out-play him? I would just be glad there are guitarists like him still around so the rest of us look good! :)

Yep... that's all we need are dudes who get literally mad at other peoples playing ability and styles. Somebody must have brought out the forum soapbox again.

It's like being in high school... "dude, that sucks" "this sucks" "look at me I like to complain and say stuff sucks and is stupid"

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

I do have to take a little back at what I said..

this guy rocks and I enjoy listening to his tapping...link

BTW..Is anyone else getting skeeved out with the repeated use of the words "tapping","tap" and "tapped"in this thread?

Its starting to sound..IDK...perverted.....

+1 there. That is another great example of tasteful tapping.

Re: Tapping. I hate tapping

I am guessing the 19 y.o. said something to annoy Jerry. Like the whole "you need to improve on (such and such)" What is it with people who are not as good as you at guitar saying crap like that? Guitar is a lifetime achievement and it seems like twerps like this have to give you something to feel down about or to make themselves feel bigger. Don't worry Jerry, Tell him there is a kid 2 years younger than him who can shred his ass to the BONE. Maybe dial some mids into his crappy modelling amp and tune his guitar standard when he isn't looking eh?
