Taylor 114: yes or no? Low-end Taylor owners?

Pierre

Stratologist
I played one today and I was honestly blown away from the first chord. So much character and PUNCH! Very powerful sound, but at the same time almost as much clarity as a CE210 I tried today as well, and the notes are a little rounder and with more power. Ideal for my travis picking.

It's 660 euros with a gig bag... Just looking for experience from Taylor owners really...

Re: Taylor 114: yes or no? Low-end Taylor owners?

Tell you what dude, I've been playing A LOT of acoustic guitars lately. A LOT. Shopping for one myself.

Played a bunch of 100 series Taylors, and 200 series. Sorta started shopping with the strategy of starting lower and eventually moving up in price range until I couldn't justify it.

I will say that out of everything I've played, the 200 series was the best bang for buck out there. The 100 was good, really good, but for the price leap, I would consider the 200. Just had a more resonant sound overall. The feel seems quite similar, but the 200 just felt more alive.

If you find a 114 that sounds good to you though, jump on it. GREAT guitars.

Taylors rule Pierre. I've had a 414 for 7 years, it's my main live guitar as well as the only one used while recording my album. Amazing tone and all.

I can't imagine even their lower-end stuff being bad. If it played well and sounded good to you go for it. They're very good and, as you described, sound really clear and punchy, especially that grand-auditorium body-shape. Amazing for finger-picking and flatpick styles.

one great thing about taylors, they pretty much use the same neck and same construction on all thier models.. The thing that primarily changes as you go up the price scale is the type of wood and ornamentation.. If the 100 series moved you, then go for it. Taylor will back you up any way.

I'll go pick her up next week then... :) I'll need to save up for another three months for the Fender SuperSonic but well... that wee Taylor is really something fun!

Re: Taylor 114: yes or no? Low-end Taylor owners?

The last time I was intimately familiar with the full Taylor line, I don't think there WAS a 114. But I always liked the X14 body style, and the old 110s were fantastic for the money, so based on those two almost-related facts, I say do it!

I personally have a Big Baby, the lowest of the low-end Taylors. It's been serving me well for very nearly a decade now.

Re: Taylor 114: yes or no? Low-end Taylor owners?

For entry level/mid level guitars, the Taylor 100 - 400 series and the Martin DM and DR are the way to go. I think Martin even discontinued the DR (dreadnaught laminated rosewood) because it sounded just about as good as their high end models.

I have a 214CE and love it. I like Taylors in general because they seem to be crispier and punchier as you mentioned, and the necks feel closest to an electric of any acoustic I've played, making it an easy transition for a predominantly electric player.

Good score on the Taylor Pierre. Finely made instruments across the line.

My Taylor Koa 300-series is just golden out by a campfire. I've never recorded it, but man do people give me a lot of compliments when we go camping. And, it's more comments on the tone over the look. It might be a lot of my walking the bassline a bit on my old campfire songs, but it really projects and I've got no problems with any ice picky highs.

I think Taylors are great guitars overall and this one just grabbed me. Tone-wise. Neck shape is something I have to get used to if I've not picked it up. It's not overly huge or anything, but I do wrestle with it some times. Tone is so good, I can't put it down. I think I'll own this one when I die one day.

I have a 214ce I got a couple months ago and I absolutely love it! I had a 110 before that but I can honestly say the 214ce is a better guitar. Taylors rock, hope you enjoy yours man!

I have a 110 and my particular guitar sounds fantastic. If you found a great-sounding acoustic that fits your style at a good price I don't know why we're having this discussion. I can vouch for Taylor's fretwork and intonation as well.

I wouldn't consider a Taylor 314 entry level by any means. That's the best bang for the buck up until you get to the 800 series.

Taylor is a solid guitar and quality. You can do no wrong. I've jammed on many Taylors and enjoyed them all. Martins were hit or miss with me.

Pierre, would recommend getting a Fishman Loudbox for an ungodly tone.

Well they also have a 314 at the ship.

Bonus coming in soon, a lot of money saved up... so... I'll try it tomorrow and see if it's worth two 114s... :)

I love my 314ce.

Re: Taylor 114: yes or no? Low-end Taylor owners?

I can't remember if mine is a 314 or 324. I know it was some Fall edition something or another.

Re: Taylor 114: yes or no? Low-end Taylor owners?

It sure is pretty. I prefer the almost bleached Taylor look in fact... and they have the sexiest headstock there is. And well... the guitars are just drool worthy.

The 300 series is pretty damn top-end for me. I'll be happy I think. But given this month's finances I better save up a little more...!

Re: Taylor 114: yes or no? Low-end Taylor owners?

Played some 300 series guitars today. Fantastic instruments!
