Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

Yes, a good D-28 is my idea of "An Acoustic Guitar." Classic.

But a good D-35 is "The Ultimate Acoustic Guitar." In terms of pure musicality, a good D-35 will mop the floor of all in its path. They are beasts. Balanced, shimmery, harmonic, responsive, tough and raunchy, and loud. They can do almost anything, and do it better than most anything else IMO. Plus they are just gorgeous.

That D35 comment I find odd. My Dad has a D35 and I've never really liked it, and my Hohner is WAY louder than it. It's a great guitar, but my cheapy Hohner from the 70s I've always liked better and I think a D28 is head and shoulders above the D35. Having said that, Taylor takes the cake.

^, A good acoustic as well. Too bad, though,... it's not in the poll.

That D-35 might benefit from a trip to a good acoustic repairman.

I went through some repair work on my Martin that improved the guitar both in action and sound.

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

The Martin D35 has a three piece back and was created to use up small pieces of rosewood left over from making traditional two piece backs. They're nice guitars but most serious acoustic players regard the D28 with it's two piece back as usually sounding superior to a D35. I just sold a D35. Nice guitar but it wasn't getting played.

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

I would have to vote Martin. Not a fan of Taylors & Gibson.... well most of the Gibson & Taylor acoustics I've played are not what I want to here and I have played a bunch. The older ones with the Orange label (Gibson)are great, but someone at Gibson sometime in the early to mid sixties thought it would be wise to make the bridge adjustable and it just didn't work

That typed I have played a mid 30's Advance Jumbo that I would say is one of the best larger guitars I have ever played.

About 15 years ago i was looking for a new acoustic guitar and me and a buddy went to Mandolin Brothers in SI. They have about 250 th 350 guitars on display ready to be played. The best sounding guitar in the shop was a 1941 Martin D28.... the second best was a Santa Cruz brand New. So my search was on. About a year later I bought in my estimation my soulmate. a 92 or 93 Santa Cruz OM. Just an absolute amazing guitar. About 10 years later I bought a Tony Rice model. The TR is basically a D28 with an oversized sound hole. The best way to describe SC guitars is they are Martins.... made by hand. Wonderful Company and amazing guitars..

I have a HD28 so I voted Martin. AS far as the acoustic tone a Martin is hard to beat.

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

I've been a Taylor guy since 2000. I was doing duo and solo gigs and the Taylor blew away anything available at the time for playability and plugged in sound. The brightness really helps the guitar cut through the din of a noisy bar. (sort of like a V30 does for electric) The shop had a nice selection including Martin and Gibson but the Taylor won out. Who knows what I'd go for today as I've not played another acoustic save my old Yamaha beater since I got the Taylor.

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

Every Taylor I've played, plays thin to my ears as do Martins - I pound acoustics and they need to be able to hit back. I used to play my 185 with a quarter - that is a good test. If it cannot punch back - what is the point?

A friend brought a rather large box Taylor cutaway to jam last week. I was really interested - it was surprisingly heavy - thinnest damn thing I've ever played. My 330 was acoustically almost as loud. How can that even be?

Gibson Jumbos
Guild Jumbos

Martin - D35

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

I'm a Taylor man. That's what I own, play and gig with.

But I love a good Martin, Gibson and Collings too, and I've owned some nice ones.

Taylors fit me best though. My Taylors are comfortable play and sound great.

Of course, I'm talking about my Taylors...not just any Taylor. :cool2:

Here's my matching pair of '95 & '96 Taylor 512's:

I'm inclined to say Gibson, especially because I own one, but I've been really digging an aluminum topped Martin. I have no feelings for Taylors.

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

Santa Cruz.
+1 I own 2 Cruz's and I wouldn't trade them for anything.

A while back I had a Gibson JGO. It was my first good guitar. I bought it new in 67 or 68. It was a good guitar but not a great guitar, it was an entry level guitar, but I learned how to play on it. Now Fast forward to the late 80s and I broke it. It has some serious cracks going around the waist & the string tension was pulling it apart. My luthier said it would cost as much to fix it as its worth so go buy yourself a new guitar. So I headed over to Sam Ash and wound up with a Taylor 615. I had that guitar for about 10 years and I absolutely hated that guitar! So I went to a guitar show and found my Santa Cruz. It is truly my soul mate. Every time I play it I am amazed at how great this guitar sounds in my hands. A few years later I bought a second one (a Tony Rice) and this one is also awesome.... not as awesome as my OM but in a different way.

Over the years I have played a variety of acoustic guitars. For me I like Martin style guitars(Santa Cruz is clearly a "Martin" style guitar), but I also own a Guild D55. a Martin D18, D15 I even have a couple Alvarez acoustics. Taylors just don't agree with me. They are very well made, they use superior woods, but I find their tone to be too bright & they play too much like an electric guitar. I like higher action as I use many altered tunings and I also play with heavier strings(13 thru 56) so this I think is why Martin style guitars just work better for me. I have played one Taylor out of hundreds that I liked. It was a Rosewood/cedar guitar. Very responsive, but literally all the others sound like glass in my hands.

So point of all this is I don't think you can limit your choice to either Gibson, Martin or Taylor. There are an awful lot of Companies that make guitars that kick some serious ass. Collings makes great guitars, Santa Cruz, Goodall, Their is a guy in Massacusets named Julius Borges who makes Martin style guitars that sound like a 50 year old guitar when they are brand new. He takes about 18months to 2 years to build one. Amazing guitars They are also priced pretty heavy James Taylor has been Playing Olson guitars that are made in Minnesota. Same thing. So I think you have to be somewhat more flexible

Glad to see we are in unanimous agreement that Guild is king!

When it comes to 12 strings I would agree. Guild 12's are second to none. They are huge and you can play them tuned to pitch! They have a really powerful truss rod to counteract the added string tension and they are braced accordingly. I haven't been able to find an older model price right, but when I do I will own one!

Never played a Guild 6 string I loved. Even the old one's from the 60's seemed kind of stiff and lacking in bottom to me.

But I have played some nice Guild 12 strings (old ones) and owned one before it started self destructing. It was an old one from the 60's, and it sounded really good when it wasn't falling apart. Eventually I sold it because it wasn't dependable. The bridge would loosen, the pick guard peeled off, etc.

Replaced it with a Taylor Leo Kotke that never let me down and sounded even better.

Had to sell it for needed cash - the guy got a great guitar.

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

What, no Falbo? :burnout:

The edge has to go to Martin. Their line is so broad, they even have fake Taylors now too. And if you ask most acoustic players, their dream collection will include a Martin, but may not include a Taylor or Gibson.

Frank, I'm as much an acoustic guitarist as I am an electric guitarist. Will you be at NAMM next January? I would love to try a Falbo!

Re: Taylor, Martin or Gibson (Acoustic) Poll

I'll be there with some Falbos in a few strategic locations but it's too soon for a booth. I'd be honored to meet up with any of you guys, but Lew you top the list!

After you check out the "inspired by Taylors" at the Martin booth of course...:laugh2:
