Taylor T5z Pro

ehdwuld

A Ficus
Has anyone had any experience with the T5 or T3?
There are few used ones on GC Used
And I browsed thru the new ones at Sweetwater
OMG they Really gorgeous

LPBs thread about an archtop made me think about a different acoustic

These look like a cross between electric and acoustic
They have the shorter scale that I like

There is a semi local shop in Pensacola that has them
I may buy local. I'm not sure
It is an awful lot of cash even used

And I would like to get some first hand opinions and reviews
From the folks I trust as authorities on this subject

Please share with me you experience

If you just have opinions on my writing style then please
Please hang on to those and move to the next thread
Spare me

Thanks

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

They're really cool. Picked one up once at Guitar Center. Looked at the price tag; enjoyed it... Gently...

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

ive played a few of the t5 and they are cool guitars but not for me. these days im much more into a strat that sounds like a strat, a tele that sounds like a tele and so on. the taylor has acoustic sounds and electric sounds that are great. the electric pup does clean or dirty well, it just has a different tonality than i prefer. they are very easy playing instruments

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

The ones I have played have been wonderful. Taylors are one of those guitars you either get or you don't- lotsa bass and treble, and scooped mids. It works well in a mix, too- I have seen bands use them, and they sound great through a PA.

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

Ive played several and love them!! Just havent had the extra cash for one.. Would love to have one

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

OK just came back from the semi local store with the said T5s

They only had one Pro model an a Classic

The Classic had a natural mahogany top and was a grand less with a bag instead of a case

The Pro they had was the Denim colored one, not the one I wanted
At almost $3000 I'm dang well gonna get the color I want.

The Classic with the mahogany top was nice
Both had the same features

Super light body @ 4 pounds
Electric style neck
Full hollow body
D'Adarrio Electric 10s

Switching
Five position switch

There was only one position that gave the piezo pickup
And that was with the neck pu

I suppose because the piezo needs the humbucker to not sound so brittle

They were willing to give me a small discount

I got to give it some more thought.

LPB I blame you for this hollow body gas

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

Haha, awesome. Those are great guitars. If you can do sound clips, too, that would be great as well.

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

Son of a ......

So I played the T5z in the store
They didn't have my color and at that price
I kinda want my color

So I ordered one that I want
It shipped yesterday
But it's the T5s
The T5s has the larger acoustic sized body
And flatter radius on the neck
14 compared to 12

I think I can deal with the larger body
I think I can deal with the flatter fretboard

But I'm not sure if I can deal with the higher action

I don't know
It'll be here shortly
We'll see

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

My experience with acoustics is they have a higher action than electrics
The T5s is set up as an acoustic with electric tendencies
The T5z is set up as a hollow electric with piezo

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

Ok, that makes more sense; with the higher radius you could ideally have lower action. I suspect a good setup/lower 'electric' gauge strings will get you the same action (or lower) vs. the T5z, at the expense of true "acoustic" tone. Can't say how much difference it would make through an amp.

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

The ones I played in store were not really loud
The acoustic part is just loud enough for practice

If you are gigging anything but the living room, you'll need amplification
But they both are that

I called Taylor support
They were really helpful
Said the necks were the same profile and nut size
Just radius difference
They said if I wanted phosphor bronze with the wound G
I may want to get the bridge they made for that

UPS tracking says it'll be here this weekend

I'm so stoked

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

I took some serious looks at these guitars when first introduced. I was told that the T5 prototype was done as a bass guitar.

As a six-string, the guitar just did not fit my style for either solo acoustic gigs or with my band. I prefer to use a full dreadnaught...and I continue to use my Martin D-18 and D-28 Retros or my Taylor 710-CE (Fishman Prefix Blend).

I was doubly disappointed in the T-5-12. I was hoping for an acoustic that I could use for John Denver songs at an open mic and get Rickenbacker 12-string tones with my band. It did neither well...IMO.

The one guy that really sounds great with the T5/T3 is Doyle Dykes. His Chet Atkins-style of fingerpicking is a perfect match to these guitars....but it is not my style. YMMV.

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

Keep in mind that if for some reason you don't like it, send it back and get the guitar you originally wanted. How did they send the wrong guitar? Or am I misunderstanding?

Re: Taylor T5z Pro

I ordered a used one off GC Used site
And the z and s looked alike
I didn't know they were two different models

The used one was less than half the price of the new one
New being the z model
