TC Viscous Vibe

Anyone played with one of these yet?

One of my buddies just dumped his MXR UniVibe pedal for one of these, says it's vastly superior. If it can approach what my JAM Retro Vibe sounds like on a good day I might consider switching over. I'll be doing a shootout on Thursday night.

Re: TC Viscous Vibe

I have the MXR M68 and a Red Witch Moon Phaser. I really ought to A/B those and see whether one could go.

Re: TC Viscous Vibe

I've had the MXR on my board for a while. I would love to hear a good side-by-side comparison.

Re: TC Viscous Vibe

Is it a "real" vibe? If so, I wonder how it compares to the Voodoo Lab, DryBell and Earthquaker Devices.

If by "real" you mean does it use a lamp and photocells? Then no, the TC is digital.

The only company I know of that consistently produces digital pedals that pass The Test is Strymon, but they don't make a Vibe pedal.

Re: TC Viscous Vibe

Give 'em time... The TC stuff I've bought I've been very happy with, and the TonePrint abilities bring a whole new level of tweaking to the table...

From what I understand they don't make real Uni-Vibe circuits anymore because the photocells use a toxic chemical that isn't used anymore and other photocells not containing this chemical (for whatever reason) don't respond the same way.

Re: TC Viscous Vibe

the viscous vibe is awesome. i liked it more than the mxr. the way you can speed it up just by holding down the button is a lot of fun.

Re: TC Viscous Vibe

When you let off, does it ramp down, or does it just turn off? Ramping down would just be awesome...

So I should probably stop rubbing my photocell vibe pedal over my bare skin?

Re: TC Viscous Vibe

Didn't Korg or somebody recently release a UV type pedal designed by the original UV creator with added stuff?

Re: TC Viscous Vibe

Yes, the Nu-Vibe.

That's a set of manual sweep faders, not an EQ. I'd love to match that with a Fulltone Tape Echo, Teese Wah, Mayer octavia and Analogman Fuzz and get my Jimi ON! :D

Re: TC Viscous Vibe

I love my Viscous vibe.

What do you want to know about it?

Well I suppose I'll find out all I need to know tomorrow night, but mainly I want to know if it sounds as good as my Retro Vibe.

The Retro Vibe is the most transparent, lush, and musical Vibe I've ever heard and once I heard it I was like, "That's IT." But it's expensive and down on tweakability, but that's OK for the sound it yields.

If the TC can do better I'm interested.

Well i've never played the retro vibe. The tc is a 1:1 digital recreation of the original shin-ei univibe though. It sounds very musical to my ears, especially if you put it before any drive effects. Thick, swirly, and lush are words that come to mind.

I even set up the toneprint patch with a faux-tremolo effect, which soumds great.

Have you ever compared it to the MXR UV?

Re: TC Viscous Vibe

I have not. I kept reading reviews of the mxr saying it didn't sound good with drive effects so I skipped it. I chose the tc for it's size, it's authentic sound and for the toneprint capability which makes it tremendously versatile.

I have one and put it in front of my MXR Classic Overdrives. It gets pretty swirly but seems to get lost if I set the speed lower than a certain point (I like that slow grind) so I have to make sure I don't bump the speed knob.
