Technical question regarding A5 magnets and a desired UOA5 overall sounding effect.

Good Morning,

I have a hypothetical question to ask.

This question will pertain to a PAF style pickup.

Suppose you desire the sound characteristics of an UOA5 magnet, (where it is meant that an UOA5 can be considered as a tonal combination of an A5 and as an A2) but all that you have access to is an A5 magnet. What can be done at the pickup building stage that can approximate an A5 to "sound somewhat" like an UOA5?

In general, I guess the idea would be to bump up the midrange or somewhat tame the bass and treble.

Possible solutions?

1. Can there be some degree of degaussing?

2. The number of turns of wire on the pickup?

3. Winding pattern done to the pickup? And if so, does this winding pattern have a name? Or can it generally be explained explained.

4. Other possibilities?

Thank you very much.

Greg

UOA% are readily available in the US and Europe, and only cost several dollars. It's much easier to get the tone you want by just getting an UOA5. Nothing else is going to replicate that.

Many say it can be done with degaussing.

IME, to my ears an A5 degaussed to UOA5 levels does NOT sound at all like a fully-charged UOA5.

But as tone is subjective, I don't think you can have a definitive answer.

The wind and degaussing probably.

From what I've read on the subject of building pups it's more about how the pup is designed to sound with all of it's parts in total. You could use any mag you want to get the sound you desire if you design the pup around it, but when you say P.A.F style do you mean output wise or looks wise (two coils/Slugs and screws)?

I would like to thank you blueman and lt. kojak for your replies.

Maybe I should rephrase my question,... If possible, how could you either dial-up the midrange or tone down the bass and treble of an A5 using the solutions above?

I realise that UOA5 is an easy item to acquire but I was trying to ask this as some sort of technical question.

Thank you again.

Hello Rockstar,

I was meaning output wise.

Thank you.

In a nutshell: no.

The solution: use an A4. Problem solved! ;)

Thank you very much again Lt. Kojak. I guess that is due to the "flat EQ" characteristic of the A4?
At least that is how I have seen that people try to describe the A4 as.
