Technique Comments Please

A thread in the Sound Off room reminded me about 'bio-feedback' practise, stuff like watching yourself play in the mirror or recording yourself playing to help study and perfect your technique.

I thought I'd give it a shot and recorded me struggling through the Sweet Child Intro (again :)).

I'm kind of worried about my picking technique as the only way I can comfortably play is with my arm resting on the guitar by my elbow and my hand free-floating as I pick. I think this is why my picking accuracy is poor and why it took about 20 takes to make it through this little piece without screwing up.

If you guys could take a look and tell me what you think that would be great - you might be able to spot something I didn't.

LEE - This should show you how I manage it with 3 fingers instead of 4.

The clip is now an MPG file which will play in Windows Media Player and is 1.04Mb

I can see it but not hear it.

I'll comment on technique when I've had a think about it.

Re: Technique Comments Please

Seen the vid..The way that your supporting your pickinh hand doesnt look like its very stable and it would take much more effort to be accurate..what i do (im sure many others do too) is rest the inside of my forearm close to my elbow on the edge of the body of the guitar like you seem to be doing already, but then i rest my the outside of my palm of my picking hand on the bridge..this also allows me to palm mute quiet easily as all i have to do is move my picking hand just over the strings at where the bridge ends..you will see alot of variations of this too as some people (like me) also rest my pinky just under the pickup..i dont know if this is a "good way" per se but i find it gives my picking hand more support and control over..but as i said i dont know if its the best way so wait till someone with a little more experience comes along..

And do you use only 3 fingers for the majority of what you play?
because its a very good idea to incorparate that pinky into your playing, i only did about a year ago and im gald i did as it does improve technique and makes co-ordinating the frettign hand easier..it may be hard at first but get that pinky inot play..

Re: Technique Comments Please

I've tried resting my palm near the bridge but it feels really weird to me - I'll practise it for a while though and see if I can get used to it.

I use my pinky plenty in playing other stuff, just that the Sweet Child Intro was the very first thing I learnt - and because I learnt is using three fingers I haven't managed to un-learn it that way :)

Weird that some of you can't open the file - opened up fine in Windows Media Player for me - might be a plugin thing?

I've converted it to mpeg so it should work ok for everyone now.

Re: Technique Comments Please

you should pick more from your wrist than your arm, it takes less effort and lets you go faster.

i'll see if i can get a vid of me up, i dont rest my hand on the bridge much either, i find playing more towards the neck gives a fatter tone but i do move onto the bridge to trem pick

i lightly rest the base of my palm over where the bridge pup is (dont press in to hard or the strings will hit the magnets and that creates crappy noises)

i dont have a webcam yet for this pc.. i'll try and record at my neighbours house or something if he'll let me install guitar port on his pc

Re: Technique Comments Please

you should pick form the wrist, not ther arm. so your wrist can move but your whole arm shoudl be rested. i play with my palm on the bridge andnsometimes with my palm in the middle between the pickups.

Re: Technique Comments Please

I'd drop the three fingered playing if I were you Jag. Take a look at how you have to hold your fretting hand at an angle to compensate.

Besides, if you have four frets and four fingers - what's the best method?

I'll try and get a video of me up - it'll make a change from music.

That would be cool to see your technique, I find it much easier to learn by seeing the technique than by hearing it described. :)

Re: Technique Comments Please

ok i found two clips on my old PC - man i've put on weight!

they are two years old so obviously i've got better since then

where can i upload them to? they are both less than 2 meg files

Re: Technique Comments Please

you nead to work on the string skipping part. and just use your wrist. not your whole arm.

Re: Technique Comments Please

ok heres two 2 year old video clips. thanks Jaganath for letting me host them.

these are purely to show how i position my hand and pick. I can play a lot better now ;)

http://www.bitemegraphics.com/nuntius/video 24.avi this one seems to be when i thought playing my guitar low was cool.

http://www.bitemegraphics.com/nuntius/video 60.avi this one seems to be when i found out playing it higher was easier.

i had only been playing about a year and a half so no slating my poor playing and my ripping off my guitar wants to kill your mama riff :p
