Tele players-question about Arlen Roth's '53

I picked up Arlen Roth's "Masters of the Telecaster" DVD and really like all the footage from the greats. $20 well spent!

There are some clips where he really works his tone control to get a wah type effect. It seems more dramatic than my tele.

Could he be using a 500k pot? I have a 250k TBX-should I change it out to get that dynamic effect-or is it just him vs. me?

Thanks,
D

He got that from Danny Gatton. Danny Gatton has commented that some tone pots just have a taper that gives better wah wah effects. He also liked that .05 tone cap for a more dramatic bite out of the treble frequencies.

Many players these days use a .02 cap. I do. I prefer it because when I turn the tone control down it reduces the treble but leaves more mids in the signal.

But for those wah wah or doppler effects you're talking about Danny Gatton seemed to think a .047 or .05 cap was better.

Danny Gatton was my favorite of all the virtuoso tele players...

whoa lew, you got 2 surfer strats now? very nice, i hadn't noticed.

a sprague .047 would do the job easily right? does the quality of the cap affect the tone?

i find the quality of the cap effects the tone only slightly, with that said i have orange drops in all of my guitars. putting a .047 in there will help get that wha like sound. good pickups always help too. i find i can only do that kind of wha like thing on two of my three teles. Good luck

Sure...the Sprague .047 would be perfect. I would say the value of the cap (.02 vs. .047) makes a big diff but the composition or brand of the cap makes less diff. Maybe none.

That said, I never use ceramic disc caps and always use Sprague Orange Drops (or Hovland Oil N Foil) caps just because I want to be 100% certain my guitars sound as great as they possibly can.

Yes, I have two Strats with the Antiquitys. One has a set of Surfers with the Surfer Custom bridge pickup and the other has a Surfer neck and middle and Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup. The one with the TH bridge pickup is my favorite.

I have a feeling that the midrange response of ash is better for getting the the tone-wah thing happening. Alder, basswood and poplar bodies tend to be a bit smooth through the mids.
