Tele Project Report:Took a trip up to Napa

I bought this stuff about 8 months ago, the plan has been that my cousin Jarett(SD member Justwendell) and I, were to work on these together. I made a trip up to Napa last weekend and now i'm almost finished(so is he and am waiting to see pics), just waiting on my super paul bunyan pickups from Zhangliqun, i'm sure they will be sick! This was the first guitar I have ever put together and am extremely happy about how it turned out. I know there's lots of post like this, but I hope someone can benefit from hearing a first timer's thoughts.

Tele Project-
Body: 1 pc. Swamp Ash Unfinished- from Guitar Mill=$130 shipped(special deal)
*Honestly I don't know if I would recommend guitar mill unless you can get a good deal, although this was a good price, the rout in my neck pocket was a tiny bit off. Nothing a little sanding couldent fix, but USACG seems like the shizzal for bodies and necks. It's esp. cool that you can see what your getting with the web specials.

Neck: US-1 AAA Flame Maple, Brazilian Rose Wood Board, Jumbo frets, 12'' radius, Paua dots+ Clear Finish=$511.50 shipped
*As of now this is the nicest feeling tele neck i've ever played. I think it looks killer, although the flame on the back is not as amazing as I would have though, I think warmoth can give you better flame and birdseye, but for quality and feel it's all about USA.

Bridge, Joe Barden Vintage Bridge: $52 shipped, Ebay
*Got a great deal on this, it was still in the all parts wraper(by the way All Parts is the cheapest place to get it new), bridge is sick IMO There maybe some better vintage bridges out there(like the Callaham), but for the money it rocks!

Knobs-Late 50's Flat Top Callaham Knobs-$43
*It was kinda hard to fork out this much for knobs, but at least you know they will last you. So heavy, and beautiful.

Pickups- Super Paul Bunyan set.-$135

Finishing Supplies-Re-Ranch Sunburst in a can

* I would recommend everyone get a can of blush out and an extra can of clear. Sand paper is pretty cheap from here too, although I found Pep boys carries very fine grades for super cheap. Pep boy also carries the buffing agent reranch sells, which works amazing.
*The black edge on my body is pretty thick, it was kinda a mess up at first and was going to re-do it but then I started kinda liking it and went with it. Whatcha think? At least it's alittle differn't.

Control Plate, Switches, Wiring, pick guard everything else
* I got everything from either All Parts or Warmoth, these two seemed like the cheapest places for the stuff I needed. Also I hear Martin Six String Custom(SD Member) has some good wiring kits.

Overall I learned how much work goes into finishing a guitar, A LOT! I'm sure you get faster, but took me forever and I don't think I would have finished it without the help of my cousin, so thanks so much!!!!

I'm sure JustWendell will make a post showing his coo, tele soon, he stopped working on his guitar during the final wet sanding(using baby oil) to help me w/ mine.

the trading post:smack:...lol

those pics came out pretty good. I'm still on 1200 grit sandpaper, so my thread will be a ways off. Congrats on the near completeion.

Re: Tele Project Report:Took a trip up to Napa

Psst... you're gonna need some pickups. ;)

Seriously though, it looks good. I can't tell in the picture... did you finish the neck, too, or did USACG do that for you? The shot of the back of the headstock looks great.

I've love these kinds of threads. I like to see the result people's hard work. They are that much more enjoyable when you put them together yourself. Enjoy.

Thanks guys! I totally was going to finish the neck, but USACG said if the neck was not finished, it would not get the same warranty, I believe this was because of the flame maple, which is more likely to warp esp if not finished right away.(Please someone correct me if i'm wrong).

As EricMeyer4 said before I deleted the thread in the trading post, I do have some nice "Air Buckers" in there.

Re: Tele Project Report:Took a trip up to Napa

It's not so much the flame in the maple, as it is maple being susceptible to warpage when combined with the sweat from your hands. I thought both USACG and Warmoth offered warranties so long is the neck had a hard finish regardless of who applied it.

I guess they're more likely to warranty a neck if it's one they finished because they have no way of knowing what kind of finish you might apply.

If that's a USACG finish then it even looks thinner than the finish on Warmoth necks, which is caked on. I had heard it was thinner. Looks great though.

Oh I'm a newbie, but is it a good thing to have a thinner finish on the neck? Thanks
