Telecaster + Dual Rectifier

Raging BB Gunologist
I'm thinking about getting a Tele.

I usually run the gain on my Recto around 10:30 (vintage high gain). Tube rectifier, spongy power, then turn it up as loud as I reasonably can to get some compression out of the power amp and speakers.

My Les Paul (PAF type) provides its inherent tone (which I love), but there's always a certain mud present, which I think is just the inherent nature of humbuckers. It a nice, thick sound when riffing/soloing, but can loose clarity if I add too much to it.

When I switch to my other Les Paul (P90) there's a certain clarity when chording. I can hear individual strings with more clearly and I can increase effects density without everything mushing together.

With this in mind I want to see where a Telecaster will take me. Problem is, I don't know jack sh*t about Teles. I don't know which models I should be looking at, not do I know which specs are important to me... Alder vs ash, maple vs rosewood, three saddle vs six saddle bridge, pickups?

I do know I need something that'll do well with high gain, but I don't think I need a really hot Tele. I already have guitar's that can push the amp.

Check into the Squier Vintage Modified telecaster - either the HS or HSS model. It's very versatile especially if you put a SD Jerry Donahue in the bridge.

Here's mine. P90 is the latest addition. Jerry Donahue in bridge + OR15 = great Sabbath "Behind The Wall Of Sleep" tone.

Re: Telecaster + Dual Rectifier

Single coils sound great through a recto. I really like strats and teles through my Roadster. The amp remains really articulate as you turn up the gain. I prefer my thinline with three brass saddles to any of the others that I have owned over the years.

This.

A Tele sounds great both clean and dirty through a Dual Rec. I'd guess the reason most people seem to say that Dual Recs just have "okay" cleans is because people tend to be playing their "rock and metal" guitars and pickups through the clean channel. I have a Tremoverb, so maybe other Dual Recs are different, but I enjoy my Tele through its clean channel just as much as through my '59 Fender Bassman RI. Its different on clean, but its no worse by any means.

Re: Telecaster + Dual Rectifier

I have a Rectoverb25 and my tele sounds great through it clean and dirty. Watch out for 60Hz noise, though, if you're a hi-gain player. Don't know your budget but if you have chance, check out the PRS S2 Vela - it's a great guitar and it's got some of the best telecaster tones I've played. And it sounds magnificent through my Rectoverb.

Re: Telecaster + Dual Rectifier

I'm getting myself a Richie Kotzen tele next year, can't wait to run it through my single rec.

Re: Telecaster + Dual Rectifier

The Tele bug has been biting me lately too... I know a decent amount about Teles but I'm not super religious about them like some people are.

I do believe there is a specific recipe for the "true" Tele sound but a Tele in general is a great place to start for kickass tone.

I was at the LA Amp Show recently and all of the best-sounding venders had some form of Tele in the axe stable. Coincidence? I think not!

Re: Telecaster + Dual Rectifier

I love my ESP Vintage Plus tele. I'll put it up against any Fender.

Re: Telecaster + Dual Rectifier

I love the cleans on my dual Rec. My tele has a SD vintage tele in the bridge and it really shines through the non pushed mode on channel 1.

Re: Telecaster + Dual Rectifier

NGD.

The Tele through the Recto sounds like rock and roll. It doesn't sound at all like I expected, but that's a good thing as it sounds even better than I expected. I thought I'd get thin and twangy, but instead I got thick and raunchy.

Re: Telecaster + Dual Rectifier

Back when I had a Blues Jr, the only guitar I could get good tones with was my Tele. For some reason, that guitar would bring out a brownish tone when I cranked that amp. And for some reason, I never did try it through the Triple Rec I recently parted with. This makes me wish I had.

And as a side note, I had the chance to try out a Tele loaded with a Duncan Alnico II Pro Tele set. It was at a pawn shop, so I had no choice but to play through the least craptastic practice amp that they had, and even so, that guitar sounded damn good. I wish I would've bought it.

Sweet! And let me throw my 2-cents-worth in on the Jerry Donahue bridge pup. It's what a Tele is supposed to sound like. ;)
