Telecaster humbuckers pickups

I have a Squier telecaster, but it is closer to a LP than to a regular Tele. It is made of mahogany with a set neck, routed from the back and has 2 humbuckers. Also has the Gibson scale length. It plays very nice but does not sound that good. Which pickups would you recommend, Jazz and JB or Duncan Distortion set?

Sounds like an awesome guitar! Let’s see some pics. And I would recommend JB/Jazz since that’s an awesome set but it depends also on what you’re trying to do with it.
Anyway, post some pics.

What tone are you wanting to get???

We'll need some guidance there before we can recommend anything.

Re: Telecaster humbuckers pickups

The best pickups for you are the ones that give you the tone and response that you want depending on the type of music you play.

Since you have given us no information that can help us help you, you need to tell us what you want to end up with and what specifically you don't like about what you've got.

Re: Telecaster humbuckers pickups

This is not my main guitar. I have a MIA strat with stock pickups. Another strat with Tex mex, and another strat.that I'm turning into a superstrat with a pair of 59s.

I want the telecaster to have a hotter bridge pickup and one in the neck that matches in tone but I could play clean. Something for heavy rock. I do not use drop tuning.

Re: Telecaster humbuckers pickups

The Jazz/JB combo was built for a Tele with 250k pots. I'd try it.

Re: Telecaster humbuckers pickups

This thing has 500k pots. What I'm afraid is that my Tele is mahogany not the typical alder/ash and I'm concerned as I read a few people posting that the JB is muddy in mahogany guitars. Im not sure if I should go Jazz & JB or Duncan Distortion set.

Re: Telecaster humbuckers pickups

The assumption that JBs are dark in mahogany guitars (which is a fact that is frequently recited) comes from the fact that JBs are dark to being with. The JB has an upper midspike that causes it to seem bright, but in darker guitars the midspike starts to move towards the lower mids. In short, if you guitar isn't too dark sounding, you shouldn't have any issues with the JB.

Re: Telecaster humbuckers pickups

Those were really nice teles when they were out. I'd put Seth Lovers in them, but I wouldn't really be playing high energy rock with them.

Re: Telecaster humbuckers pickups

Screamin Demon might be good. Clear, fairly bright (which would work great in your guitar), and very articulate but with a little edge that can push an amp into heavy rock territory. Not high gain with the potential for mud like a JB in mahogany. If it is only between the JB or Dist, I'd pick the Dist.

You also might consider the StagMag, a dual purpose pup that has great output in series for some crunchy rock but it retains note to note clarity and articulation, and when split it can get close to what a Tele is supposed to do.

Re: Telecaster humbuckers pickups

Personally, I'd go with a Custom in the bridge and a 59n for the neck. It will be a hard rock machine.
