alright i'm going to the good old guitar shop tomorrow and they're quite the fender dealers. i'm trying to find out what all the fuss is about with teles. i've played a few but i'm convinced they were duds. i really want to get into teles but i haven't found one i really like. any suggestion about which models have a chunkier neck with a good sound for hard(er) rock

if possible help would appreciated

The early 50s teles have chunky necks, a 52 RI for example.

When you say hard rock, do you mean classic rock like AC/DC or The Who? It can definately do stuff like that. Anything heavier than that might be pushing it without a pickup change.

I have a 52RI and it smokes. I have a Vintage 54'N and a JDB in it. Great sounding and playing guitar.

I also have 4 other Teles (its odd how that happened I consider myself more of a Strat guy). Each of the Teles I own are a little different. I have a blackout Tele which has 2 HB in it. It also has a set neck, I have a Custom Thinline with 2 HB also. This is a Mahogony body and has a flame maple cap, it has a JazzN and a 59B. They are also coil tapped. The neck on this guitar was shaped after a '61 335, it plays great and sounds more like a 335 than it does a Tele. I also have a California Tele which has a StratN PUP and Tele Bridge Pickup. Sounds great I like to use this for slide. I also have an American Tele with a Duncan Firebird pickup in the neck and a hotrail in the bridge. This was previously Xsissives Twistedcaster. Smoking Tele for Hard Rock stuff!

My MIJ 69 Thinline RI has a pretty chunky neck and it sounds great for hard rock. I have it set up with a PGn (with the ability to split) and a STL-2 Hot Lead with a tap at the bridge. This guitar can do everything from country with the split PG and tapped STL-2 to STP style grind and everything in between.

The rock doesn't come from the guitar. It comes from your genitals (look at a fender headstock).

pick up one of those new highway 1's

flip to the middle position, roll back the tone a little, kick on the distortion

The 50's teles will have the bigger necks...but something like a 72 deluxe will get you closer to Rock faster without a pup change.

I think that a Tele neck pickup with enough output gives you some classic rock rhythm tones... think Jimmy Page or biting blues/southern rock...
But the bridge pickup is my favorite thing about Telecasters... a must have IMO...

You can do hard rock with a Strat a Tele and even a Jag... so don't worry about it...
