Tell me about Custom Custom

Re: Tell me about Custom Custom

Who knows. I do know that I don't like Gibson pickups except in Gibson guitars (and I've tried many), except for a 498T in the bridge of a Jackson Kelly. Didn't like it in a Warrior, KV, Dinky, Soloist, SLS, or a Charvel SoCal, but it was made for a Kelly.
Still haven't found a match for the 80s Dirty Fingers, or the Iommi I had, or the 500T, or the 496R. Guess I'll have to get a Gibson. Dammit.

By the same token, I didn't like any pickups in a Gibson except Gibsons. Funny how that worked out. Oh well, more SDs for my Jacksons

On a different note...How do you think the CC would do in a mahogany body with set mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and flamed maple cap.....

dunno a bout the flamed maple cap, but im running a CC in my sg standard. Thats got all the other stuff you mentioned.
Sounds ballsy and killer with slide.

Re: Tell me about Custom Custom

I've got one in a guitar that's very similar to an SG - thinner lighter body, all mahogany, except a striped ebony board and neckthrough with a Floyd. It's dark, to say the least.

What kind of slide are you using, because some are bright and would offset a warm PU.

Re: Tell me about Custom Custom

Might sound a bit dark.

The Custom Custom has always been my "safe" pickup, probably because I tend to lean towards Fender & G&L's which are generally fairly bright guitars? It's super versatile and it will work in almost anything, I think the only time I installed one & absolutely hated it was when I dropped one into my S.G.! I actually like darker sounding guitars but this was plain awful! I've never really liked L.P.'s so I can't say for sure the same thing would happen if you were to try a C.C. in one but I'd imagine you would end up with similar results? Dark & muddy...

Right. In Fenders, CC's are a good choice. For Gibson-design guitars, a Custom, C5, C8, or UOA5 Custom are usually better choices. All of them have more high-end than a CC.

Re: Tell me about Custom Custom

The CC works great in my Strat-inspired Ernie Ball Silhouette Special, made of alder. I tried it in another Ernie Ball, an SUB1, made of poplar, and it sounded like mud. I switched out the magnet in that for a roughcast A5 and it solved that problem.

Re: Tell me about Custom Custom

How would it compare to evh pickups? The ones in the stripped

I have used both Evh Wolfgang, Custom Custom, and IM1 in the same guitar. The CC has a guttural, throaty roar to it. It is pick attack sensitive. Grewt sound but you gotta earn it. The Wolfgang is smooth on the top end but compresses more and. Is easy to get harmoncs. The IM1 sounds like Panama.

Re: Tell me about Custom Custom

The CC is a particular pup, no doubt. You'll love it or hate it.

I played one for a long time in a fairly bright Epi LP Classic. It was awesome.

I played a LOT of slide on that - all mans, ZZ Top, also a lot of Clapton woman tone. Might not be your bag in an LP.

It shines in Floyded super starts. Was it the EVH pup? Don't know. But is a Strat/Floyd, it would be my go to 1984 tone hum bucker.

Tons of threads discussing t5he CC. Check out the search function.
