Tell me about ENGL

I've heard the name before, so I thought I'd check them out. I went to the website and it seems like they make some cool amps. The price seems okay for some of the lower models, but is the price on the website the price that they sell for? Or MSRP? Anybody have clips? Pics? Where can you buy one online?

Re: Tell me about ENGL

MSRP for the most part... Generally, they're focused towards high end players. I love the powerball model, especially the new one. They revoiced the mids and made the noisegate more effective. Unfortunately, if you get an older powerball, you'll be lost in the mix if your other guitarist is playing a 5150 or Marshall, or something with similar cut. With two powerballs or in a one guitar band, though, they're ****ing crushing!

The best online dealer is usually said to be http://www.rocksolidamps.com/. They also have a TON of soundclips up. I don't really think they do all of the amps justice, so here's one a guy on the Andy Sneap forum did with a Powerball and matching 2x12 with V30's through an SM57 and a behringer mixer, which turned out orgasmic.

Now that I'm reading and looking more...the little Thunder 50 seems odd. The footswitch doesn't switch the channels? What's it for then? And so...you've got two channels, but a shared eq/gain? That makes no sense.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

Nope, it footswitches between clean/lead on one button, and crunch/lead on the other. Not sure about the shared EQ and gain, though. I believe Ankalar had one a bit back.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

Hmm...they sound killer from the clips I've listened to. That little Thunder 50 is pretty attractive with it's small price tag. It'd be great for my band, all we do is metal/hard rock, and we never play clean.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

Well, is there another guitarist in the band? If so, what amp does he play? Some ENGL's tend to get lost in the mix against mid-heavy amps like Peavey's, some Mesa's, and Marshalls.

Honestly, I'd be inclined to recommend a 5150 for metal/hard rock, and they go even cheaper than a Thunder.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

Yeah, he plays a Mesa combo, I think it's a Trem-o-verb or something. I can't remember. I've been looking into the 5150, I wouldn't mind it at all.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

Well with the going rates, worst case scenario is you break even trying one out ;). That or an XXX, the combo versions of both go for insanely cheap these days.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

I've played the XXX and the 5150, but I've got more experience with the XXX. I like the XXX quite a bit, and I love it's versatility. Who knows what I'll do.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

I've owned both :p. If you need any help deciding, just go ahead and ask. Basically, there were certain things I liked better about each.

5150: killer raw tone, easier to have a good lead and rhythm tone with the same settings, sits in a band mix perfectly, resonance/presence knobs.

XXX: More refined and Mesa like tone, two different and totally useable gain channels, kickass old thrash and lead tone, better cleans, bias pots, EL34 option, and adjustable FX loop levels.

If I could only have one amp, it'd be the 5150, and I don't regret selling the XXX to get it, but I really do miss it. After I pick up another 7 string, I'm going to grab another XXX head or the 60W 1x12.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

Basically... I worked construction for the XXX and first cabinet/speakers two summers ago. Saved till the next X-mas, used money from that to buy a Jackson Dinky, which in the following April I sold and took a loan from my Dad for an RR-1. I payed that off by working and saving through last summer. Decided I didn't like the RR-1, so I sold it, which funded my C-7 and Rivera. Then I sold my XXX to fund the 5150, and now I'm here.

I think I'll end up being worse than GJ when I get to his age. :smack:

Well you really can't beat two Schecters and a 5150 for metal!

Of course you can! 2 Schecters, an Ibanez, a 5150, a Rectifier, and an XXX! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

haha, but that's more money!

Re: Tell me about ENGL

Hey Jeff, that's a sick clip!

Regarding the 50w combos... can you get good tone without having to crank it up? (Based upon the notion that most of the distortion will come from the pre-amp?)

Edit: I think one of the guitarists in Jag Panzer uses a Powerball... and it sounds awesome.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

How would you compare the 5150 and the XXX? I have been looking at those lately.

Yes, this is true. Chris Broderick runs a Powerball and Avatar cabinet; that guy is awesome! The other guitarist runs Bogner's, though.

The 5150 is a 5150... you've heard it on countless records if you've looked. It sounds just like that; it's not studio magic, the amp really sounds like that.

The XXX is like the bastard son of a 5150 and Rectifier, if it was raised by a Marshall. More refined and thrashy, but just as badass.

Well they're pretty different. The 5150 has 2 channels, neither of which really do cleans well at all. The XXX has 3 channels, one of which is a bonafide clean channel.

Thats just flat out wrong.

I've been around ENGL amps for years. They dont get lost anywhere. Its the 5150 that gets overpowered by the ENGL in most cases. The ENGL will give you a more complex tone, better cut, superior build quality and more clarity than any 5150 or XXX or JS model Peavey.

There is a reason the ENGL is expensive. Same reason that VHT, Bogner or Diezel are expensive. You get quality with theseunits.
