Tell me about fender amps.

Hey, I don't have that much experience with fender amps, I've always seen them as clean amps until I read that Ross Childress of Collective Soul used fender twins for his dirty and clean sounds, I'm a huge collective soul fan. And heard that the rev used BF fenders and a pro co rat to record the solo on cheap sunglasses which is one of my favorite tones of all time. And I believe counting crows uses them too.
I recently found out there is a local boutique amp/repair man that takes any post 65' bassman and does this http://abellamprepair.com/services.htm
sounds like he marshalizes it but still....and aren't early marshall jtm45s based on the fender bassman? I wander if he could plexisize it...hmmmmm??

Re: Tell me about fender amps.

I like my 71 BF Bassman Export amp just the way it is for both clean and dirty.

Re: Tell me about fender amps.

Leo's old amps were simple variations of simple circuits provided by the old Tube makers. The man had a knack for tuning those circuits into beautiful tone. The old ones have this natural break up that we all now know as power tube distortion. In the late 60's, Fender decided that they needed more clean headroom, as in more sheer volume, ala Marshall. They then came out with the Silverfaced amps and many feel lost their way.

To me, there are two main flavors of Fender. There is the tweed and the blackface. Two different tones for sure. And I love them both.

I always try out different amps, but seem to come back to old fenders. My first amp was a blackface Princeton Reverb. (which I stupidly sold) I guess that my ears just grew up on that tone and it's difficult for anything else to stack up, well... 'cept my Bad Cat. It far exceeds expectations. But that's another thread....

Re: Tell me about fender amps.

Here's one important thing: Marshalls were based on the '59 tweed Bassman...not the '65 Bassman. The '65 Bassman is as differant from a '59 Bassman (or a Marshall) as night and day. They don't sound similar at all.

( About that avatar... :) ...it's "cute" but also simplistic BS and I hope you don't believe it's true. )
