Tell me about Fuzz pedals.

I don't know much about the ideals uses, or really the reason for owning one. If you have some knowledge and experience with them please enlighten me.

Re: Tell me about Fuzz pedals.

I don't go to work for an hour... Damn, that's not nearly enough time to explain what I can about fuzz.

Re: Tell me about Fuzz pedals.

My pedal board setup is very simple - its an solitary fuzz face that never gets turned off.

Things I've learned about getting the best sounds out of a fuzz face:
1. There can be nothing between the guitar and the fuzz face.
2. There can be nothing between the fuzz face and the amp.
3. The amp must be tube powered.
4. There are a myriad of sound that can be achieved by subtle changes on your guitar's knobs.

Fuzz faces are a different beast to many of the more modern ones out there and are extremely finicky, but the rewards and subtleties are there by the boatload if you are patient.

Fuzzes are great fun! There are of course SO many to choose from, you really need to try about half a dozen or so and see what feels right for you.. I never really got into fuzz boxes until relatively recently (been playing 30+ years) because frankly, a lot of them just sounded like pure sh!t to me.. but you see that's just the point, they're an effect.. they're supposed to be a little rude sounding.. lol.. and now that I've gone pretty much all analog.. I just love 'em..

Fuzz boxes come in many flavors depending on the kind of transistor they use, Germanium has a "softer 60s/70s" vibe while silicon has a "harsher" clipping.. a lot of the cooler (but maybe more expensive) boxes offer both with a switch to select which one you want..

I currently use Super Fuzz which is very rude sounding and extreme, as well as a Big Muff which is about as polite/smooth as a Fuzz box can be, used by guys like Gilmour... these 2 boxes cover most of my fuzzy indulgences.. for now.. I may get a Fuzz Face for the Hendrix vibe down the road..

Also, be on the lookout for boxes that can give you that Octavia (octave up) sound too.. that's always a cool effect, in small doses..

Happy hunting!

they are horrible for thrash metal music, I prefer my proco Rat II for that

they are great for 1970s black sabbath and zeppelin music :headbang:

+1. Not much more to know than that. Try a bunch out and see if you like 'em.

Re: Tell me about Fuzz pedals.

I know I am going to catch hell for this but I use a digital fuzz. My soundbloxPRO Classic Distortion gives me a Big Muff, Octave Fuzz, Fender Blender and Fuzz Face tone all in one pedal. I also get Rat, Tube Screamer and a ton of other tones out of the pedal including insane metal settings. I have 3 presets set for fuzz and 3 set for distortion. I can get 12 distinct stompbox tones out of one pedal. I would suggest trying one before knocking it. I thought it would be a cold sounding DSP pedal but I was o' so wrong.

This, yes. I would contribute though, that a treble booster is another "type" of fuzz.. m like, "Fuzz-lite".. But that's a whole 'nother thread.. as well as a Rat Distortion is more a distortion than a fuzz.. it's definitely a "ratty" distortion, to be sure...

Redeemed I use an analog treble booster! I have a BBE FREQ BOOST that I love. Supposedly it has the same circuits as the famed Rangemaster. I am not sure about that but the pedal sounds great.

I've been impressed with some of the most recent digital technology.. I try to keep an open mind to these things.. I use a Twin Reverb amp for example, but use the Hall of Fame Digital Reverb which is SO much more versatile, and very convincing, at least to my ear .. I will check out this SoundbloxPRO thingy..

*Fingers in ears* Lalalala ... I can't hear you! :)

With my soundbloxPRO Classic Distortion pegged, you WILL hear me!

Re: Tell me about Fuzz pedals.

Fuzz is basically when you take a curved wave of a guitar's signal, and then by putting it through a series of diodes and transistors, you change the signal to a square wave. The amp reads that square wave as fuzz.

Fuzz is generally an older style of distortion, with many players from the sixties using it (Jimi, Keith Richards). Bass players usually prefer fuzz because fuzz keeps the low end of the bass. That's why the Big Muff is so popular with bass players especially (Chris Wolstenholme has three, one on each amp of his). I like fuzz with my bass, and overdrive on my tube amp.

I think that the Big Muff is a good introduction to fuzz, as it's well known among guitarists and bassists, and should give you a good idea of fuzzes in general, it's also around $80 for a brand new one. A Fuzz Face is the next one to try, and those are more for guitars than basses, but still gives great tones on both.

Re: Tell me about Fuzz pedals.

I like this (and some others too)

Re: Tell me about Fuzz pedals.

I can 'thrash' all day with a fuzzface. It's there, you just have to think differently and use the volume knobbie. I bring it back to about 7 and it's thrashy and tight. Roll it down and it's crunchy and all the way up it's a sputtering violin of doom.

My favorite thing about my oxfuzz germanium IS how it's a lil different every day. I never touch the bias on the inside and I just go with it.

I run it first and then into a bypass loop with a few envelope filters. I get some super deranged synth tones out of two common pedals.

Re: Tell me about Fuzz pedals.

I've also come to fuzz quite late. I spent a lot of time avoiding them, looking for smoother drives and distortions. I think it's probably worked out better for me in the long run as I needed to understand how my playing, my guitar, my pedals and my amp all interact in order to make the best use of fuzz. I'm currently running a Tone Wicker Big Muff and I'm awaiting delivery of a Voodoo Lab Superfuzz.
