I want to know more about the Black Pearl. How loud, how much headroom, how much overdrive, and does it sound better with EL34 or 6L6?

It is an EL-84 amp only!
Plenty loud for clubs and small stages...
Got alot of options for its sound...
Not for metal.

That amp has been on my GAS list for several years. Like Vasshu said, it's not for metal, but very everything else ...wow! Incredible chime!

It sounds like a very dark amp on the sound clips. There are Genz-Benz reviews say that the bassiness and compression can't be dialed out of their amps. Is this true?

As said it is an EL-84 amp.
It has good chime, and it is a very "on" amp, fills up alot space soundwise...
Has a good bottomend, not your normal tight sterility modern amp.
As for compression...it is very tactile to play yeah...some like that, others don't.
The drive is fat and middy, with lots of nice lows...
But it has that variable eq that gives alot of possibilities.
Nice British flavoured amp.
