Tell me about the Mullard ri

I love JJs, but I wish they had less fizzy highs. Is the Mullard ri thick and beefy like the JJs? I also see on Eurotubes that the Gold ECC83 is supposed to be less fizzy, is this true?

Re: Tell me about the Mullard ri

I forgot to mention I am talking about the Russian Mullard.

Re: Tell me about the Mullard ri

Not a bad tube and light years ahead of the JJ's in tone!! While the New Sensor Mullard reissues are no match for the Blackburn plant real thing (I do have both) they are one of the better new production tubes out there. I personally prefer the reissue Tung Sols for the short plates fatter tones and resistance to microphonics in the super high gain Prosonics I'm running. However the Mullards are a close second and would really work well in a lower gain more forgiving amp. The Mullards have a lot of air and sparkle and are really lively sounding tubes. It will be like taking a blanket off your amp coming from JJ's to ether the Mullard Reissues or the Tung Sols!!

I totally agree!

I use Mullards in my Quick Rod, but the Tung Sols are equally nice, and not quite as 'round' as the the Mullards.

The JJ preamp valves are great for high gain, however.

JJ's in the preamp of every thing I have tried them in sounded dull dark and lifeless. I do like the power tubes and the rec tubes a lot though. What were you running them in?? A really BRIGHT amp I could see them sounding ok in but anything else :disappoin:sleeping:

Re: Tell me about the Mullard ri

I tried Tung Sols in v1 and it gave my amp this VERY prominent upper mid thing that didn't sound too good. It has decent bass, but the highs were fierce ina bad way. The JJ has the beef, but they are fizzy and somewhat muddy sometimes. I'm thinking of getting some mullards for v1 and 2 or the gold JJs. Thanks for the replys.

the Mullard reissue is a longplate 12AX7 made by New Sensor (Sovtek, EH, Tung-Sol, Mullard, Svetlana). The Sovtek LPS is a similar tube and a great-sounding one for lots of applications. worth giving those a try - they're usually easier to find and a little cheaper than the Mullards.

Re: Tell me about the Mullard ri

I tried the Mullard reissue 12AX7 that GT sells. Found it to be too buzzy when pushed. I was using it in my Tonelab, then switched back to the original Electro-Harmonix it came with. I'm hearing good things about Tung Sol, so that's my next adventure in tone:naughty:

I assumed that we were talking about this tube the whole time:

does GT still make the 12AX7M? haven't seen one for sale in ages

Yeah, I'm talking about the Ruski not the GT. I tried the GT 12AX7M and the 5751 M and both were noisy, muddy, muffled sounding. Just horrible. I want to know how the Reflektor Mullard sounds like because I hear it's like a 12AX7LPS in a way. BTW, I tried the LPS and I really liked it, but I would love it if it was thicker/beefier sounding. I'm looking for a tube that doesn't have really high upper mids, is not extremely bright, is a bit more linear sounding, and of course has that beefy thickness that is good for extreme metal styles. Does the Reflektor Mullard ri fit that description?

Re: Tell me about the Mullard ri

The GT 12AX7-Ms that I installed in my Mesa amps' V1 sockets have been GREAT--everyone of them in all five amps. I'm going to be really bummed if I can't get them anymore!

Re: Tell me about the Mullard ri

Ok, so last night at practice I tried the Tung Sol in V1 again and it really brightened up the 6505+ which is something I was not looking for, but it made the tone more clear and percussive. To deal with the brightness I turned down the presence from 8 to 5, the low resonance from 3 to 5, the bass from 5 to 6, and the mid from 6 to 5. These seemingly slight changes really work well with the TS tonality and it brought the amp closer to the JJ beef, but with more clarity. I would not use more than one TS in that amp because then it will be way too bright and upper middy for me. Still looking for that rich sounding tube for V1.

Maybe try a different JJ? I have one in V1 and it's all beef.

Re: Tell me about the Mullard ri

The Mullard 12AX7M Groove Tubes reissue I've had nothing but incredible sound from--when you get one that works or isn't microphonic. I just put a Tung-Sol in my Vox Tonelab and while it wasn't too much different from the EH, it does sound a little richer.

Re: Tell me about the Mullard ri

I bought some used telefunkens and a NOS rft 12ax7's Im using in my 3 gain stages and it sounds pretty good!, nice crunch. These tubes are that bright in my amp so it tones the high gain some. I tried a few of newer tube but when playing loud the old ones sound the best to me.

I own over a dozen of telefunken and rft (there are other brandings on them too). They are both one trick ponies.
The Telefunken hates gains and compresses overly when pushed. It has a clear and bold sound without any peaks also great in hi-fi. I use it in clean stages and in the last stage of my preamp.
The RFT is the 70ies Marshall OEM. They were produced in East Germany behind the iron curtain. Marshall rebranded them in large quantities and established the typical Marshall sound of that period. Great in any stack application and crunch channels.

Re: Tell me about the Mullard ri

what I have now is the tele v1 rft v2 tel v3, 2 tele's then the rft didnt sound as good. I have a 10 band eq so that helps some. And 30 to 40 bucks a tube is not bad. I saw the band Heart lastnight they sounded great! Hit after hit, Bad company and the Doobies tonight if the weather holds.:)

Re: Tell me about the Mullard ri

I have a NOS Siemens EL34 Quad set in a rebuilt Marshall 74' 100 watt Super Lead head, and there's just no comparison to all the various reissue EL34 types. If you want the real deal, especially in a vintage Marshall or vintage Marshall clone, you can find a guy on eBay that sells duets for around $90 and quads for around $180 that are well worth your money.

That's good to hear. That's my next move with the Tonelab.
