I totally agree! Not a bad tube and light years ahead of the JJ's in tone!! While the New Sensor Mullard reissues are no match for the Blackburn plant real thing (I do have both) they are one of the better new production tubes out there. I personally prefer the reissue Tung Sols for the short plates fatter tones and resistance to microphonics in the super high gain Prosonics I'm running. However the Mullards are a close second and would really work well in a lower gain more forgiving amp. The Mullards have a lot of air and sparkle and are really lively sounding tubes. It will be like taking a blanket off your amp coming from JJ's to ether the Mullard Reissues or the Tung Sols!!
I totally agree!
I use Mullards in my Quick Rod, but the Tung Sols are equally nice, and not quite as 'round' as the the Mullards.
The JJ preamp valves are great for high gain, however.
I tried Tung Sols in v1 and it gave my amp this VERY prominent upper mid thing that didn't sound too good. It has decent bass, but the highs were fierce ina bad way. The JJ has the beef, but they are fizzy and somewhat muddy sometimes. I'm thinking of getting some mullards for v1 and 2 or the gold JJs. Thanks for the replys.
I tried the Mullard reissue 12AX7 that GT sells. Found it to be too buzzy when pushed. I was using it in my Tonelab, then switched back to the original Electro-Harmonix it came with. I'm hearing good things about Tung Sol, so that's my next adventure in tone:naughty:
I assumed that we were talking about this tube the whole time:

does GT still make the 12AX7M? haven't seen one for sale in ages
Ok, so last night at practice I tried the Tung Sol in V1 again and it really brightened up the 6505+ which is something I was not looking for, but it made the tone more clear and percussive. To deal with the brightness I turned down the presence from 8 to 5, the low resonance from 3 to 5, the bass from 5 to 6, and the mid from 6 to 5. These seemingly slight changes really work well with the TS tonality and it brought the amp closer to the JJ beef, but with more clarity. I would not use more than one TS in that amp because then it will be way too bright and upper middy for me. Still looking for that rich sounding tube for V1.
The Mullard 12AX7M Groove Tubes reissue I've had nothing but incredible sound from--when you get one that works or isn't microphonic. I just put a Tung-Sol in my Vox Tonelab and while it wasn't too much different from the EH, it does sound a little richer.
I own over a dozen of telefunken and rft (there are other brandings on them too). They are both one trick ponies.I bought some used telefunkens and a NOS rft 12ax7's Im using in my 3 gain stages and it sounds pretty good!, nice crunch.
