Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

After a quick browse through my local store today, I almost left before I noticed this: a Hamer double-cut. Les Paul Junior shape, but with a flat maple top, single-bound. All the usual stuff: two humbuckers, volume-volume-tone pots, three-way switch, tune-o-matic, stop tail, cheap Schaller-looking tuners. Trans amber finish shows a maple top, but no idea if it's of decent thickness, or just veneer.

I've always had a thing for the Hamer Sunburst/Special/Ultimate models (James Honeyman-Scott endorsed them for a while), so I took it down off the wall for a quick once-over. This revealed that it's a Slammer series guitar, also that it has a visible seam across the back of the headstock; scarf joint, maybe? The guitar was in really nice shape for its age, which I'm thinking is '80s, right? The amount of yellowing on the top showed it was old, but the amopunt of play wear was much less. One small ding in the binding below the neck pickup. I had in a hurry to get home, so I only took time to give it a rough tuning, and bang out a few chords. To my surprise, it sounded really good unplugged, sustaining with a nice midrangey ring. The price: $199.99.

Hmm.

I'm not in a position to buy another guitar right now, not even a $200 cheapy. The house needs a roof. However, this guitar is interesting. On the plus side, I don't have a humbucker guitar right now, and my recent multiple viewings of "Celebration Day" make me think I should. One the minus side, I'd have to sell my MIM "Esquire" with is a really cool guitar, but does admitedly overlap with my #1 Tele. Another small minus is that trans amber isn't really one of my favorite colors- I'd much prefer black or wine red.

So, Hamer experts (I know who you are), tell me about this Slammer. What can I expect long term? What sort of value is it as it stands? Is it worth upgrading? Will standard Gibson-style hardware (bridge, tailpiece) fit it? (I noticed the bridge saddles are cut big, wide, and wonky, so some work may be required there, eventually). What are the pickups like, assuming they are stock? Keep in mind my ideal HB set is a pair of 59s, or maybe a Custom/59 bridge 59 neck. Are the originals roughly PAFish?

In general the Slammer series is not highly regarded, sought out, nor valuable. Least expensive imports Hamer had made, and I have yet to play one I thought was worth the asking price new.

YMMV with an individual instrumemt.

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

I've never played one, but from everyone I've heard from who has, their general feeling was that it was basically a piece of balsa wood with strings and cheap pickups.

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

Did it say Hamer with Slammer Series below it or Slammer by Hamer. The Hamer Slammer Series guitars are real decent. Late '90s and early 2000s issue no imports from Hamer until after Kaman bought them and moved them to CT. about 1995-1996 IIRC. I have had several of that model, Sunburst, and still have two like the one you mention. Nice import version of Hamer's Sunburst model from the late '70s. Hardshell case? If original pickups they are Duncan Design 59/JB combo or Duncan Design Duncan Distortions. The code sticker should be on the underside. I have found them all to be pleasant enough. If you get it and like it an upgrade would be worth it. To me trading a MIM Fender for this would be a good deal. As you said no HB guitar but ya do have a Tele already.

3 pickup version. Third pickup non original. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Hame...y-/360656323149?pt=Guitar&hash=item53f8cac24d

Bet your's is like this one. I sold one just like this to a fellow SDUGF member from Miami a few years, 3-4 ago, for $275 or $300 IIRC.

Not flat top but could be a great snag.....

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

The big word on the peghead definitely said "Hamer". I'm not sure "Slammer" appeared on the front of the peghead at all, maybe only the back? I'll stop in and check it over in more detail on Monday.

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

Those old Slammers are in the same league as the PRS SE series. Good mahogany was used, so the groundtone of that construction-type is more than decent.

For the right price, I'd get one in a microsecond flat! ;)

Those carved-tops are great feeling instruments.

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

Yeah, this one's a flat top, but with single top binding. The back and neck are just clear-coated or maybe lightly stained, and it all looks like mahogany. The peghead BTMN posted is probably the same as this one, I just don't remember for sure.

I'll go give it a closer look-see tomorrow.

I'm betting it looks like the first link I posted above minus the middle pickup.

The one I have like it is a fantastic lil guitar I paid $275 for about 6 years ago with a HSC.

Yup. "Slammer by Hamer" are entry level instruments.

Hamer Slammer Series debuted in the early 90's, and were affordable alternatives to USA Hamers. They were MIK, I think. PRS SE guitars are a good comparison.

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

FWIW I absolutely love my old Slammer Series Hamer Californian. Best shredder I've ever played.

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

It already has a tapped Quarter Pounder in it... close enough.

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

I spent some more time with it today, just playing it and finding all the dents & dings. It's actually kind of a pretty guitar:

Nice mahogany around back:

Still thinkin' about it...

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

Already has Schaller Straplock buttons on it too. If you have the strap part you are set.

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

That black one on the bay is Sweet! Hanging at $98 right now.

Add some decent knobs, and that would sound KILLER through a Marshall VS100R

Re: Tell me about this (cheap) Hamer

That Black HAmer BTMN klinked to on the bay went for $205

- Somebody won big!
