Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

Check out Lew's recent thread on the new Eminence speakers. If it was me, I'd probably stick a Wizard in there.

Of course, if it was me, I'd be converting that BJ to an 18 Watter.:smack:

But I'm weird.

A BJ can be converted to an 18 watter? Is that the BillM mod that I hear about?
Do you mind elaborating on that one Rich? I've been thinking about getting BJ or PJ.

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

Mike, the JJs are a night and day change from the stock tubes. They're perfect for that little amp - and now Bob at Eurotubes has three different sets!!

The speaker could use changing. I've yet to make up my mind on what I want, so I haven't bought one yet. Those suggestions seem to be the norm for all the discussions I've had/read.

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

there is only one speaker jack so its the internal speaker or a cab, not both. i have a 2x12 cab with an 16 ohm v30 and a 16 ohm g12h that i use if i want a closed back and more volume

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

thanks Jeremy...i thought that might be the case...they should have put another speaker jack in there! i'll probably pick up a cab one of these days then...but i'm in no hurry.

Yes, but it's not a simple mod. The BJ has the right tube complement and transformers, but that's about it. Starting with a BJ, you save having to build a cabinet, punch a chassis, mount tube sockets and transformers, etc, but it's a complete re-wire. To convert it, most people rip out the entire PC board and replace it with point-to-point wiring or a purpose-built 18 Watter tag board. I think you can buy special tag boards on the web specifically for converting BJ's to 18 Watters.

Of course, there's no going back - without doing just as much work as the conversion was in the first place. Still, in my opinion this is the "value leader" way to 18 Watt tonal bliss. Easier than building from scratch, cheaper than buying a reissue or boutique clone. If I didn't already have my blue mutant Phony-vox 13 Watter, I'd build BJ 18 Watter.

The conversion is pretty well documented on the web - use Google or ask at 18Watt.com.

Mike, I'd suggest a Mojo British Vintage BV30H...their version of the G12H30....they are fantastic all USA made & cost less than the Celestions.

If you get an extension cab, throw the BV25M (Greenback) in there....nice combo:bigthumb:

Here's a tip: if you get a Mojo speaker, go through Lew's brother Bruce.....he sells them for a little less than Mojo does. I think Scott F might have a dealer cost thing too, but you'd have to ask him.

Whatever you do, I'm glad you got an amp Brother...Petey deserves to ROCK!!!! :beerchug:

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

yeah i've been checking out that page...i should e-mail him and ask him about that stack he's got going on and how he did that...ideally that's all i'd want is another 12 under it...hmmm...i think i'll drop him a note!?

and thanks for the heads up tip Terry...after i've had it awhile...and decide whether i even want a speaker change or not...i'll definitely check out the Mojo stuff!

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

sent him an e-mail...i'll post what his reply is in case someone else ever wants to do this!?

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

lol...i'm really curious about it...i wonder what ohm speakers he put in the combo then...a 16 i'm assuming?!

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

Great Thread Hoss, et. al...

BillM's BJ stack looks really cool. I could handle having that if it's really as good as he says. I don't have any reason to doubt him...has anyone seen a couple extra BJ's sitting idle anywhere that I could pickup really cheap? :)

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

The tonestack mod opens the amp up and makes the amp a lot less boxey. I really like my B JR. for rehearsing and smaller clubs. Still thinking about an eminence wizard for it though.

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

the clean boost and the tone stack mods look the most appealing to me...i could see those happening sometime in the future?!

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

here's Bill's reply...

"Hi Mike,

Just use a male to double female Y cable and you'll be able to hook up the internal and external speakers. Make sure the external is 8 ohms.

- Bill"

this is what i replied...but then again i am a dufus...lol

"the other external speaker must be 8ohms also?
wouldn't that bring the total load to 4ohms...i thought i'd have to replace the internal with a 16 and also put a 16 in the external cab for an 8ohm load...?"

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

If I remember correctly I think the rule is with tube amps lower ohms is ok, with solid state higher ohms is ok. So you can safely plug a 4ohm load into an 8ohm tube amp, but not a 16ohm. You can safely plug a 16ohm load into an 8ohm solid state, but not a 4ohm.

And you're right. That would be a 4ohm load.

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

My only thing is building the cab! I want it to look as authentic and factory as his does!

Re: Tell me everything about the Blues Jr!

:smack: hmmm...i thought it was the other way around..:smack:

as for it looking as good as his...i'm not even gonna try that...lol i'll be lucky to get a blonde/wheat cab to even come close...:laugh2:
