Tested the EMG 85

I've just installed in the bridge and tested.
It's a way tighter under high gain than the JB in my other guitar.
And it's brighter more with more clarity. Yeah and the EMG it's hotter.
Ok the guitars are completly different to so it's hard too compare the pups!

I was just wondering what's makes it tighter?

yeah I compared the EQ and the guitar with the EMG has less lows
~ 7db less @ 100 Hz up to 400-500 Hz where they have the same amount (neglect the fact the EMG is 6db louder)
+ more highs from 6kHz and above

Yeah. It's the right combination of the bass & low-mid levels (without knowing specifics, I'd say it's lower bass and slightly higher low-mids).

Highs play a roll, also, but it's more for clarity than tightness.

I figure it's the EQ combined with the fact that they're boosted low output pickups.

High output passives have alot of compression to them, and that compression muds up when combined with high gain. On the otherhand, low output passives are much less compressed, and thus have alot more articulation that high output passives and a tighter sound.

If you were to combine a low output passive with an clean boost pedal you would get an effect similar to EMGs (powerful, yet still articulate), though not exactly the same. You're starting to see alot of metal bands use this trick to tighten up their amps.

Yeah I'm using a TS to tighten up my amp.

It comes in my mind it has something to do with the small magnetic field... and maybe with the preamp...

A ceramic magnet isn't tighter than a a2 coz of the EQ.. so I guess it has to do something with the dynamics and interaction of the magnetic field etc...

I think compression can help tight up things...

Ben Weinman from Dillinger Escape Plan used to use EMG 81s, and is now using a Duncan '59 with the pickup booster, and just about everybody runs a Tube Screamer (or something similar) in front now.

do you feel the emg 85 tight in the bridge? i didn´t feel that
i preffer the ultra tight and surgical bass of the 81 in the bridge.

Yes, the tubescreamer cuts additional bass!
What I've heard the 81 makes the machine gun sound better...
I was afraid that he 85 is too dark ... but it seems to be just right... very agressive
