Testing for Neck Bow

I tried the fretting the 1st fret and the upper fret on my LP to check for neck straightness. I was getting some buzz so I tweaked the truss rod. I’m getting a very small gap when testing so is that normal? String buzz is now minimal.

A small (maybe 1/3 the diameter of the big E) at the halfway point is good. A perfectly straight neck tends to buzz a bit, as the string vibrates in an elliptical pattern.

Thank you.

I’ve changed my expectations with some buzzing. A little buzz that doesn’t come through the Amp is ok as long as the action is how I like it.

^This is generally what I go for. If it isn't coming through the amp, and I can't feel it when playing, I don't worry about it.

I've found there are 'sweet spots' with neck relief as well.. I mean tone-wise. At least that's what it sounds like to my ears. A tiny (miniscule) turn this or that way to 'fine-tune' things is what I always do, once I have the relief (space-wise) that I need. I think it affects the sweetness/smoothness/overtones or something..

Fret levels allow you to have zero buzz with any action. Not a single note buzzes on any of my guitars.

^ This depends on how you play. If you hit the strings like SRV then low action will buzz irrespective of fret perfection. This is why playing style is part of setup. I've seen this firsthand with my guitars that come from the local store. Another guy plays my guitar after setup and its clear/buzz free. I play (and I hit the strings hard in a lot of cases) and there is buzz in the early note.

This is why learning to do your own setups really pays off. You will eventually setup the guitar based around your own playing style. I think everyone at some point in their learning guitar tried for the lowest possible action, but as you improve and develop your own style, you will change string gauges, actions and relief. I find myself trying to raise my action to improve or change the sound.
