I was more than pleased with the sound of the TS9 John modded for me when it was run through my bandmaster and JBL, but yesterday when I popped a new 9 volt battery into there and ran it by itself into my new DRRI I was floored!
With the gain at about 1 o'clock, strat in my 4th position (neck and bridge pickups, tele style) I was blown away by the incredibly dark, but twangy top end that kept it's chime but sustained like a champ. With the reverb at two, it was the tone I have always been looking for.
If you want the ultimate cranked BF tone, throw one of John's TS9's in front of it as an EQ filter and a level boost and I guarantee you'll be impressed. The more volume you put on the amp, the lower you should put the drive on the pedal. When I play outside, it sounds great with the volume at 8 on the Deluxe Reverb, but with the TS9's drive at 10 o'clock and the tone rolled back at about 2 o'clock. The bass rolloff of the TS9 and mid hump (the excessive mid hump of a the stock pedal was greatly relieved by John's mods) are perfect for cranking a fender combo since it relieves speaker fart and boosts mids.
I'm a reborn OD user thanks to that amazing tone! Thumbs up to Mr. Spina!
