"That amp is tube - I can tell, it cuts through!"

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
When do idiots stop talking? Guy standing on the opposite side of stage asks if my amp is tubes. I say hybrid. He says I can tell - that one is tube because it cuts through. Dumb@$$. If he was so sure why did he ask? Because he didn't know.

Tubes have nothing to do with "cut" PA levels, and EQ, on the other hand do.

There is no such effing thing. Idiot probably thinks that at his big rock show where they are running rack PODs too. Loud is loud, quiet is quiet. Tone is tone.

GRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

Opposite side of stage? Yeah, bass players are usually the slow ones.

Didn't ask him if the finish of his bass was poly?

Re: "That amp is tube - I can tell, it cuts through!"

That reminds me of years ago here on this and other forums. I used to post some of my music, and people would compliment me on my guitar tone and how great they thought it sounded. They would be all into it, and then they would ask me what amp I was playing through, and how to get that sound. I would say it was a Line 6 AX2/212 running direct into my recording console. After they read that they would immediately change and be like "yeah, I can tell now, I guess it sounds ok". It never bothered me. I would just laugh. If it sounds good, it sounds good!! It doesn't matter to me if it was made by tubes, a computer, or two paperclips, a rubber band, and a can of horse farts.

Re: "That amp is tube - I can tell, it cuts through!"

I think live you can tell a difference. I get a little more thump and "punch in the chest" from my tube amps than my Line6 combo or my SansAmp PSA-1 run through the PA and monitors.

Re: "That amp is tube - I can tell, it cuts through!"

Let's not forget that monitors are usually aimed at our ears (either wedges our in-ears), and amps usually somewhere from our toes to our chest at best. So yeah, it will sound different, and yes that has to do with differing volume and EQ due to the way it is directed...

Re: "That amp is tube - I can tell, it cuts through!"

I'm more of a donkey farts kind o' guy - they're brighter due to the tight low end...

Re: "That amp is tube - I can tell, it cuts through!"

Bah, you kids don't know what you're talking about. Horse farts haven't been the same since they outsourced production to Zebras. Now, back in my day....

Re: "That amp is tube - I can tell, it cuts through!"

Zebras just don't have that vintage PARP vibe huh?

Re: "That amp is tube - I can tell, it cuts through!"

Everyone is an expert and punters always come up with the most irrelevant/boring/wrong/misguided/annoying/drunk etc statements and unasked for advice.
The best way i have found to deal with anyone after a gig is to smile, say gday, thank them for coming, shake their hand, tell them you are glad they liked the music, tell them you hope to see them again at the next one. Most people are cool and just want to say hi. If they are know it alls and offer all kinds of irrelevant info, act interested for as long as it takes for them to feel good, thank them for the advice, tell them you'll keep it in mind and that you need to help the drummer pack up their kit now (or whatever comes to mind). Thank them for coming once again.

Quoted for truth.

Just let me pack up or maybe I'll come to where you work and Friday at 5 PM stumble in drunk and have a real gab session.

Re: "That amp is tube - I can tell, it cuts through!"

I've never had this happen. Probably because I show up with tube amps and chops. :chairfall
