The 18 Watt Marshall Amp

I had a buddy that built one 18 wat6t Marshall circuit NMV amp and he was able to goose it through a 2x12 and it sounded absolutely fantastic.
Its really a very popular amp these days as people want to be able to turn up the volume utilize the Power tube distortion.
Usually the kits or built up amps are Point to Point.
I think I would love to have one and be able to turn it way up without excessive volune compared to a 50 watt.

Re: The 18 Watt Marshall Amp

Anytime I contemplate the idea of a kit build, I remind myself that extremely well made boutique or name brand amps are sitting on Craigslist for about the same price.

Of course, you won't get the learning experience that a kit provides.
But, at least you know it won't start smoking when you turn it on! haha

I have an 18 watt marshall-ish clone. It's pretty damn loud through a 2x12.

Re: The 18 Watt Marshall Amp

My mate used to have an old Marshall 20 watt mini head that was so toneful and I still remember the day he told me he sold it for £30... I went mad because he didn't offer it me first! I was on the lookout for one for years and never bothered in the end. However, I did buy a Cornford Hurricane which is an 18 watter designed by Martin Kidd, a former Marshall employee. The one thing I do know is that this amp is the most musical amp I've ever heard... it sounds fantastic at all volumes. Honestly, it's that good. It has it's limitations, headroom can be a problem for gigging but man... what sound. If the Marshall clones sound anything like this I'd just go ahead and give it a go.

I've heard some 18 watters and they can still be pretty loud, I guess the only real way to lowere the volume is with attenuation

Re: The 18 Watt Marshall Amp

Have been using a 1974 clone (TMB) for the last year. Was quite happy with it actually.

Recently, I switched back to 1987's, a custom build as well, with 400v plate voltage and RR mod.

Anyways, 1974's are great amps.
