The BEST Push/Pull Pot?

Re: The BEST Push/Pull Pot?

this is the best, hands down.

It's an MEC push pull pot, made in germany. closed housing, super solid.

You can also use it to make your enemies commit suicide.

Or at least poke something out with a redhot soldering iron while raging and foaming at the mouth

PS or, wait.... is it actually huge in life? Cause if you add those awful lugs to the usual pushpull sizing, then you've already ventured into the realms of S&M

Re: The BEST Push/Pull Pot?

They are very smooth to turn and have larger shaft diameter.

Just as a technical FYI, I think you're referring to the bushing. The "shaft" is the part that turns that the knob attaches to. The "bushing" is the threaded part that you use to mount it. The shafts are usually all 1/4". The bushing size varies with manufacturer.

Re: The BEST Push/Pull Pot?

But that’s a surface mount pot, not one us mortals use.

i'm not sure what you mean by surface mount? We use them like regular pots. They have a 10mm shaft, they install like a regular one. They're just better.

@adieu: why wouldn't I wish this pot upon my ex? uhm... worst enemy? ;) It's in fact a great pot. we use this one and nothing else at Aristides guitars.

Re: The BEST Push/Pull Pot?

oh, yeah, the one I posted is the FOUR POLE version. Yes they make a 4 pole push pull pot :D me like! This is the regular push pull

It's a board mount pot but you can still just wire wrap the terminals. I think Warwick uses those, or used to. Maybe Framus too.

Surface mount is for prefabricated circuit boards. All the lugs on surface mount are pins that insert into the circuit board. That’s what you posted.

A switch for hand wiring would have proper open-hole lugs that allow threading a wire through to solder. That switch isn’t it.

If you say so. Never had issues wiring these. In fact, these are so much easier to use than regular pots. We've used them on hundreds of Aristides guitars so far. they're just super reliable.

and I don't know why they're so expensive retail...

Re: The BEST Push/Pull Pot?

~50 USD is about the price of a component when the run was less than 1000 units. If they did runs of 10000, it would be much less. But 4PDT push-pull is pretty specialized.

Yep. MEC components are ridiculously priced in retail in general.

Re: The BEST Push/Pull Pot?

Interesting, I'd purchased the Bourns and had to purchase additional as 1 out of the three ordered was defective. Infinite resistance so that as a tone control it wouldn't change the tone. Sounds like all the pots vendors have had someone that claims unreliable behavior. Best to test them prior to using them. I had skipped that step and had to open the guitar up a few times (checking all the connections and trying to determine if cold solder joint or something).

If I had tested prior to working with them, a swift return would have been possible. Now I have a mix of CTS and Bourns. Final result is pretty sweet though, neck humbucker volume (parallel/series), bridge humbucker volume (phase) and tone (split coil).

Bourns taper doesn't seem to be a full match to the CTS exactly however.

Re: The BEST Push/Pull Pot?

I've been using these p/p pots by CTS lately. They seem to be very reliable, smooth operating, and are super easy to wire...way easier than any other p/p pot I have used. You just strip the wire end, insert into the holes in the board (just below the pot lugs), and solder. No feeding through tiny holes in the ends of lugs right next to several other lugs. Since using these, I won't go back to the typical ALPHA type.
