The Best Rhythm Guitarists?

Re: The Best Rhythm Guitarists?

Oh. My. Gosh.

No disrespect, but... looking at the answers here clearly shows that Metal is actually bad for ya, as almost nobody seems to grasp the very notion of the most basic component of music: "Rythm".

I shake my head in disbelief...

It's ok, just flame away; got my asbestos underwear ready for cases just like this.

No disrespect, but please attempt to age yourself even further.

Don't post in this thread anymore, please.

how about ...not avril lavigne.

If she gets a signature guitar (even if just from squier) I think we all should.

You gotta sell records to get a signature guitar:p

Re: The Best Rhythm Guitarists?

Sabbath formed in '68.
The first record was recorded in 1969 but because it was released in 1970 it's a common misconception the band recorded it then too.
I'd say I'm pretty aware of the rock timeline ;)

Yes, but you're giving the title "Best Rhythm Guitarist" for an entire decade to one guy based on one album, an album nobody heard till the 70s. In fact, according to Iommi, they recorded all but one song from that first album in January 1970. (And, I dare say, that one song recorded in '69 was the worst of the lot by far.) So you're actually giving him that title based on one song.

60s : Jimi Hendrix (his rhythm, incredible)

+1. I think Hendrix was one of the best rhythm players ever. Too many rhythm players over the years just bang on a few chords, repeating the same thing thru a song. 'Steady and solid' is nice but boring. A great rhythm guitarist goes beyond that, and adds much more to songs. Hendrix put all kinds of little things in his rhythm work to keep it fresh. Exciting and full of surprises. Maybe it was because he looked at rhythm from the perspective of a highly innovative lead guitarist.

This is an odd generalisation. Hendrix' rhythm playing was perfectly suited to a three piece band, but if a rhythm player were to take that approach in a band with either another guitarist or a keyboard player or both, it could easily descend into overplaying. To call solid and steady rhythm playing 'boring' is misleading, because many songs call for exactly that, and it can be the most musically supportive and appropriate approach for the song. This suggests that one element is more important than the song and the arrangement, which is only the case if the guitar is the central element of the song. If the central focus is the vocal and lyrics, then 'banging on a few chords, repeating the same thing through the song,' could be the most musically appropriate approach to the big picture. Many great rhythm players are great for the very reason that they have the musical discipline and good taste to see their contribution as just one element in the instrumental arrangement, without trying to shift the focus to themselves.

Hendrix used his complicated & varied rhythms in the studio too, when he had layers of guitars, and I think that's what really made those songs great. No guitar track was allowed to be boring.

You can put a lot of variety into playing rhythm, and still stay in the background. I don't see the virtue in being so repetitive. Yes, on certain songs, but as a general approach to rhythm, no. My theory is that everyone in a band should use a lot of variety throughout their playing, not to hog the limelight, but to make it more interesting for the musician and the audience. Frequent little fills and flourishes. Spontaneous. I just don't see having a live band act like a human backing track. If a song never turns out the same way twice, all the better. Mix it up.

Maybe it's because I listen to a lot of blues, and in a lot of that each instrument is free to do what they want, even while the vocals are goin on. The bass is doing all kinds of runs, the piano and drums doing fancy things here & there, the guitar & harp throw in little bits of solos randomly. Makes for a great feel. Instead of having a solo strictly regimented to the middle of a song (and forbidden anywhere else) like so many rock songs are, why not let good musicians have some room to improvise when they want? They know when they can do that & not dominate the song. Makes it more of a living, breathing creation. Instead of just one guy at a time doing something interesting, everyone is. You can focus on any one guy in the band & be entertained. So many popular songs I think 'He's playing the same thing over and over, unnecessarily, why doesn't that guy do more?'

As much as I like Angus, while Malcolm provides a great rhythm on some songs, after a while it gets tiring to hear him pounding on the chords without much variety or dynamics. I think his playing & songwriting is why most AC/DC songs are considered to be 'album fillers.' I'd love to hear Angus cut loose with a more innovative band.

Re: The Best Rhythm Guitarists?

50s: Scotty Moore
60s: George Harrison (I know he's considered a "lead guitarist", but listen that rhythm work)
70s: Malcolm Young
80s: Edward Van Halen (awesome rhythm player)
90s: James Hetfield
00s: Chad Kroeger? I don't really know. But seeing as how it seems Nickleback is all I heard on the radio in the 00's

I think that's probably right, the fact that you listen to a lot of blues might make you think that the same formula applies to other forms, but it doesn't necessarily. For example, most of the artists I work for are established singers with their own career history and repertoire, and the audience has come along to hear them, and not my guitar embellishments. The audience want to hear the song, as they know it. Since they are not guitar-centric, they really mainly want to hear the singer. So I keep my rhythms solid and steady, and supportive of the vocal. It's a professional discipline, and it's one of the things that keeps me in steady work. Sometimes an artist will ask me to create new parts, in which case I'm more than willing to come up with new arrangements. But many musical styles, for example funk, rock, reggae, ska, pop, old school r&b, soul, etc, are constructed around very simple repetitive rhythm parts that are integral to the song's groove. I'm certainly not there to cater to the one or two guitar players in the audience who want to hear more guitar. I put my own projects together and play guitar-centric music to satisfy that urge.
