IMO, a Bigsby is so fugly, it's good looking. Either way, it's sure to catch one's eye.

I personally have no use for a Bigsby in my stylings. However, I can surely appreciate those who do and genuinely know how to use it within the perimeters of what it was designed for. It definitely adds an interesting dimension to their playing. This is provided of course, that it doesn't turn into a crutch, akin to most Floyd and Kahler enthusiasts.

On a side note: The vast majority of better guitarists whom I've seen with Bigsbys on their guitars don't use them at all. I can only presume they regard Bigsbys as some kind of 'classic' status symbol.

I agree with Drew on everything except that they only look good on Gretsches, I love them on LPs, SGs and Teles too.

And to those of you who posted pictures.. damn you.. that just gave me MORE Bigsby GAS. I still want a Gretsch Duo Jet most though.

dont like that they cover up a huge part of the guitar...i don't like the weight it adds and i like tools that work quickly and efficiently. oh yeah, i like to be in tune.
doesn't matter to me if setzer and neil think it is cool- when they use it, it is, but i sure don't want to sound or look like them.

You don't need a wrench to change strings, you don't lose sustain because of a locking nut, and you don't have to cut a huge hole in your guitar & brighten the **** outta your tone to have one.

Somebody's obviously never played the same guitar with and without a Bigsby. I had an Epiphone LP that came with one stock. With the Bigsby, it was seriously bright. Everybody who picked it up remarked at how LPs are usually so much darker. One day, when I finally came to my senses, I pulled the stupid thing off, and installed a stop bar. All of a sudden, it sounded like a Les Paul. The tone mellowed seriously (yes, "mellowed" as in, less bright), and the sustain was increased dramatically.

You're right though, with a Bigsby, you don't lose sustain because of a locking nut. You lose it because of the ugly-ass hunk of metal that takes up half the top of the guitar.

i don't think i said they only look good on gretsches, if i did i retract that statement, i've wanted a tele with one for a long time, and they look good on sg's & lp's

not AS good as on teles & gretsches, but

there is nothing that sounds like a Bigsby

it is a 60 year old gizmoid contraption, designed by a motorcyle mechanic. In the right hands, they are another great tool in the arsenal. Just listen to some Neil Young, the recent Son Volt CD,

I have a Bigsby on my 325 and I love it. I also run Grover Mini Rotomatics, a graphtech nut and forged steel saddles which are oversized. I love it. Stays in tune all the time. Rickenbackers are known for not staying in tune, but this guy does! With a Bigsby, it is crucial to keep your saddles lubed or oversized. With the nut, put some graphite in it. I also spray a quick shot of teflon coating on the nut, saddles, and the first few inches of the guitar string, so they are totally slippery.

On a related note, I'm looking into a new amplifier. It takes up half my living room, has 25 speakers in it, so it's heavy as hell, is painted to look like a giant turd, all the controls are on the bottom, and is only 1/100th of a watt, so you can hardly hear it.

My instructor at NGW claims that replacing the spring with a Chevy valve spring made the tuning stability a lot better.

I will review one of my Old Dan Erlewine videos. In this video he spends alot of time showing you how to setup and tweak a bigsby. I will check it out and give the 411! When I watched the video I didnt much pay attention becasue I think bigsbys are gay but, I will check it out just for you guys.
