Does anyone know what gear the black keys guitarist uses, the tone is incredible, I've never heard anything so..... close to what I'd like to have.

My friend once told me he used a telecaster, thats what started my facination with telecasters. Not sure if its true or not.

I think he uses teles with some sort of rails pickups...

it doesn't sound like any sd or EMG pickup i have ever heard, they are either custom made, or its another brand I don't like. Its such a unique tone though, thats what interests me.

i'm pretty sure it's a tele also...and i think he plays through one of those old cases that doubled as amps...i think Flank has seen them play a few times...shoot him a pm

I saw them open for Beck a few years back and now I love them! I have no idea what gear he uses though, sorry.

Jerry Donahue custom shop tele. (big "V" profile neck, one piece with maple fingerboard finished in nitro, double-bound sunburst, five way switching with a bigsby trem attatched, eldorado tooled leather scratchplat e.)
Dimarzio single coil sized 'buckers. (fasttrack or similar.)
Strings: .011 .015 .020 .030 .039 .049 (from different companies)

Found that by snooping around on the Black Keys message board. Hope it helps, I'll look some more to see if I can find anything else.

A little more lookin' got me this...

his main fuzz is an old Maestro fuzz from the 70's. it is a Maestro MFZ fuzz. they got for about 150 dollars nowadays. they have one at www.proanal og.com

he uses many though, and his amps have alot to do with the tone. he uses old Ampeg combos. reverbrocke ts and the such.

he uses a BOSS TR-2 tremolo sometimes, an Ibanez Standard Fuzz (vintage), an EH Screaming Tree treble booster, and god knows what else.

OF the pics i have seen of them live it looks like he uses fender and Ampeg amps, but i know i read somewhere that he used an amp that was built by a friend of his or something, i never could find much info on it though.

and these guys are awesome.

Hmm... Thanks for the info, and by the maestro fuzz do you mean the original?(like this sucker: http://www.guitarsandeffects.com/images/maestrofuzz.JPG) or one of gibson's remakes?

I saw them a few months ago, So far the guitar that was quoted was he only one he playd all night, his main fuzz and pedals are also correct but for most shows he has been playing through an old silverfaced fender with 4 10's which all have holes in them. It looks like he took a pencil and just started stabbing the speakers. All of his pedals are modded by proanalog so they may be able to help you more. Good luck

The Black keys are amazing to watch live. oh yeah and one more thing he only plays with his fingers.
