The coolest Boss pedals

Re: The coolest Boss pedals

Fuzz Face and Uni-Vibes long out of production. Boss and MXR pedals changing components over the years as supplies dried up and cheaper options were available. Wahs drifting to the lowest common denominator for both reasons, EHX being EHX before their late 90's resurgence. Even now, a lot of the boutique world is taking a mass produced circuit that may or may not be discontinued (thinking of the Marshall Blues Breaker and Guv'nor) and tweaking component types and values to really optimize the tone.

Many times the argument is "My guitar heroes only used off the shelf pedals, why do I need anything different?" And of course my response to that is "The off the shelf pedals from years ago that share the model number with today's pedals are not the same when you dig inside. Also, you know Roger Mayer, Pete Cornish and Bob Bradshaw were modifying pedals for the stars for years... ;)"

Also some current copies are not only using the best-sounding of the original specs, but selecting components with tighter tolerances for more consistent sounds pedal to pedal.

Re: The coolest Boss pedals

I don't think I'll ever part ways with my Blues Driver. To be honest I wasn't crazy about it stock, but the Keeley mod turns it into a goddamn perfect overdrive pedal.
Adds mids but they're a narrower, tighter band than a TS9. Highs are brighter but not razor sharp like the original, and it cuts a hint of low-end and it's in the lower side of the spectrum, so it doesn't thin out, it just tightens up.

I always like the Xtortion pedal back in the day just because it looked crazy. To this day I don't know what it sounds like. I think I'll search it on Youtube now...

I grabbed a used one at GC just because I knew it was a rare pedal. It sort of has a sweepable mid control that lets you get cocked wah tones. But the character of the distortion is generic and buzzy. I recorded a part with it once. Listened back and decided to do the take over with another pedal or an overdriven amp.

OK - here is a closet classic;

Boss Digital Metalizer

I had one of those. Ran it through a Peavey Bandit 75 combo. Got some pretty nice sounds with that thing.

My favorites of the newer Boss offerings is the Fender Deluxe and Bassman pedals. Those things just sound cool to me. I'm a fan of the Chorus Ensemble too. The new Vibrato interests me and I might pick up a Tremolo, not sure yet.

HM-2 for 90s Swedish death metal.

Was not impressed with the Power Stack at all. VERY noisy at the maximum gain setting (which is where I wanted to use it.) The Metal Core actually does have a few sweet spots. The Adaptive Distortion was pretty weak as well, no surprise that was discontinued.

Re: The coolest Boss pedals

Tried some more expensive pedals and had to go back to the DD-20, it has some tricks I depend on that nothing else does.
I am interested in seeing if the DD-500 can deliver the goods.
I use a Retro-Sound CE-1 clone because my BOSS CE-1 won't do 9V adapter and takes up a lot of space on the board.

Favorite BOSS pedals:
#1 CE-1 Chorus Ensemble
DD-20 Delay
DD-3 Delay
DC-2 Dimension-C
PS-3 & PS-6 Shifters
CE-2 Chorus
BF-2 Flanger because she sells sanctuary
Old SD-1 (think I like these better than the TS. Some time I have to try the original overdrive the pre TS the BOSS OD-1)
old DS-1 is good too but I like the RAT better for that kind of sound

Id be interested in how the DD-500 compares with the DD-20. The DD-20 is a really cool delay pedal that had some really new ideas. I love having 20 seconds of delay.

I like my FB-2 Feedbacker/Sustainer.

Not quite the same as a Fernandes or Sustainiac, but there are some interesting things that it can do, such as sustaining in a "Cocked Wah" kind of sound if set properly.

I still want a Sustainiac, but this is a "reasonable" alternative if budget is the issue.

I played a DD20 for a looooong time before getting my DD500. Sell your DD20 and get a 500. It's better in every way, both sonically and in terms of user experience. All of the things I liked about the DD20 didn't just get retained, they got better.

The Terra Echo is intense! I don't own one, but used one several times, and it's on my wish list. Their new switching system is fantastic. And a shout-out to my favorite, the TR-2 Tremolo. Fantastic bit of kit.
I own a Tera Echo, best purchase ever! I just need the multi-overtone and that should sort my board out..
