The Custom Custom SH-11 bridge pup for metal ?

Re: The Custom Custom SH-11 bridge pup for metal ?

Well, thanks guys for helping me out ... I got the chance to play an EMG81/89 equipped Explorer through an Engl Screamer and I loved it to bits...it did a perfect Lamb of God, Black Label Society, Pantera, Metallica and some Slipknot so I definately want to go with EMG's now.( I did try to play those same riffs on that Engl using a Strat and ...no :)) )

So I'll be getting a Schecter Hellraiser for all of that and that Baja Telecaster I mentioned earlier for everything else. Sorted

I'll be skint till 2014 after this but hey, I love my expensive bloody hobby ;)

The only thing I ever say to anybody who's 100% sold on EMGs because they nail metal tone, is that you're only getting metal tone with those pickups.

I can make PAFs, P90's or medium-hot humbuckers work for metal, but they also excel for rock, blues, and other styles... whereas EMGs almost FORCE me to play metal whenever I'm plugged into them.

You're obviously planning on having multiple guitars so if this is gona be 'the metal guitar' then power to ya... I just like to get that out there.

Not true, you can get plenty of good tones that aren't metal out of EMGs. Don't jack them right up against the strings and they are perfectly capable of other stuff. There are a number of players who've used EMGs that can get non-metal tones out of them and sound good. Even better, throw in an 18V mod and they are even better.

Your opinion is valid, but that's not entirely true. They can be very nice for some pop/fusion/jazz and a bunch of rock tones as well, once you master their reaction to picking dynamics, which I find rather weird and counterintuitive, to be honest.

They are awful for anything Slash or Lynch or Hendrix, because they are too (dry, clean, clinical...) 'tight' is the word. But back in the day even Mark Knopfler used to use them. He is as un-metal as it gets. I'd say they are a no-no for blues, though.

The funny thing is, aren't the 81 and the Custom Custom almost polar opposites?
