The do-everything amp . . .

I am seriously looking at getting a Traynor YCV 40WR amp and the matching 1X12 extension cab since my little 40 watt solid state just can't keep clean at high volumes. The thing is that I only get to play out at band levels once or twice a week, so most of my guitar playing is at bedroom volumes. Is this too much amp for what I want? (I was hoping to be able to get good quiet tone from the amp with just the one 12 and then hook up the other one for loud playing.) Does anyone have any experience with this amp?

I've heard good things about Traynors, but haven't played one myself. One thing to consider, is that you can get an attenuator to be able to crank up the tubes at a more manageable "inside" volume. Since you're looking at a 40 watt piece, a Weber MiniMass would be perfect and runs about $100. They can handle up to 50 watts, and can be switched between 4/8/16 ohms. I use one with my Rectoverb and absolutely love it.

I had a Traynor YCV40 1x12 until I got my rectoverb...and man that's a sweet amp..it'll do you well at bedroom volumes...obviously for great tone you need to crank it, but it's got a pretty good bedroom volume sound

I think that rig would be appropriate for you. Most of the time, you'll only need the combo, but you'd have the option of using the ext cab to push more air, when jamming with other players. I like that limited Ed. Traynor in red. I'd get that, along with the matching cab.
