The elusive 10K PAF Disscusions Open (Scott)

Re: The elusive 10K PAF Disscusions Open (Scott)

I believe the Custom/59 Hybrid could never be marketed by Duncan because it would violate DiMarzio's patents...

Re: The elusive 10K PAF Disscusions Open (Scott)

I'm thankful that you made the thing a sticky so that it makes it easy for me to avoid something that I don't give a damn about. Thanks.

Re: The elusive 10K PAF Disscusions Open (Scott)

If Dimarzio has a patent on mis-matched coils, couldn't you get around that legalese by saying the pickup is scatterwound? I know that's apples and oranges, but is there a legal definition of scatterwound? I would think legally scatterwound could be another way of mis-matching coils.

Re: The elusive 10K PAF Disscusions Open (Scott)

Heck, how do these boutique pickup makers get around these Dimarzio landmines, ummm I mean patents?

Re: The elusive 10K PAF Disscusions Open (Scott)

I think it's kinda cool that Duncan doesn't make certain things (Although I think the Screamin' Demon and Blues models are kinda 10k PAFs). They have a Custom shop should I need it, they lay their products out with simplicity and good sound samples that are pretty scientifically created in that they use set amp tones and mic-ing. If Duncan doesn't have it, there are at least 5 other brands that are NO BRAINERS to buy from and be more than happy.

Between harmony central, this forum, and the manufacturers - I prefer products being out there in the simplest marketed form so that players can find what they want easily and get out to our gigs. I do not expect everyone to be as OBSESSIVE as the people in here. When I first started swapping PUPs, I found it murder to navigate the many choices. After surfing around different brands, I have found that the most recommended models tend to be the best (PAFs, BBQs, Fralin matched sets, 59s, APH1's). They all work pretty well. MOST, NOT ALL of us, do not require highly specialized equipment to get the sounds we want - I am in that vein. For all the junk I own (custom fuzzes, amps, tubes, guitars, pups), I can STILL pretty much get my sound with a strat or an LP into a good amp (and there are a million choices from Marshall/Fender to Buddas, Riveras, etc etc etc). The rest is just obsessions gone wild.

I'll support it. Let me do the negotiating with MJ, as she hates me! :)

I am in for a 10K PAF clone (would appreciate if it were to have mismatched coils and 4c wires ;) )!

Well said Olin. A voice of reason emerges...I don't really know enough about this topic to comment, but fanatacism has been my impression of this argument. I didn't want one....but, would one sound good in a strat? :laugh2: That would be one super strat.

Ok, I'm confused....are we talking about the S-Deco? or a "limited run" of the "10K PAF" to a certain spec?

If it's the latter (and I can get double cream, A5 mag bridge), I'm in. If it's the S-Deco I'm not interested.

Re: The elusive 10K PAF Disscusions Open (Scott)

Although I'm not in a position to purchase any pickups at the moment and I have my perfect bridge pickup already, I would like to propose an idea. Take advantage of the return policy. Purchase an S-Deco. If it doesn't meet the requirements, return it and then come up with specs for a different one. Maybe even using what you like/dislike about the S-Deco as the foundation.

I'm really not interested in anything as hot as the S-Deco, but I suspect others are.

But for curiosity's sake, does the exchange program even apply to Custom Shop pups?

In the Duncan line, you might like the Blues Saraceno model.

Just looked at the CS page and CS pickups cannot be returned for credit or exchange. That shoots my idea out of the water. :blackeye:

Isn't that the PAX pup w/ trem spacing?

As I suspected. Most custom orders of any type or kind cannot be exchanged/returned. No mention of a rewind option either? BK,Wolfe, Jeff & Lindy will rewind I think(?)

Jeff,

I thought S Deco is a 10 K paf. No?

Double Cremes are cool, but this time I think I want a reverse zebra. :smokin: I already have 4 double creme antiquities.

The only thing I think we all would like is to have a little mismatched coils. Because the second the resistance value goes up the 10K mark, clarity lost gotta be obtained by mismatching the coils.

But anyway MJ is the expert, who am I to think! :smack:

all 4 are too hot for the various positions (for me).

That is why I said I've no interest in the S_Deco, but would be interested in an entirley different limited run if everyone could agree on some specs. I know in the original thread, many people were asking for the S-Deco type output, but tried to make it clear that's not what *I* am looking for. that VHPAF/Marshallhead/Maximus/BB3, level of wind is what I'm going for

Well, you could always drop a neck model in the bridge... but I see your point ;)

Re: The elusive 10K PAF Disscusions Open (Scott)

Jeff's looking at around 9.0-9.5k for the bridge (at least I think he stated that a few times). That's why I mentioned the Saraceno to him. It's slightly hotter than that but at the same time, it's less than the S-Deco.

Jeff: the Saraceno is a PAX, if you mean Parallel Axis. All 3 PAX models are trembuckers but may work fine on newer Gibsons. I think the Heritage models have the older narrower spacing.
