2002 limited run with mirror pickguard and truss cover. I have a 59/4 b in the neck and a Custom 8 in the bridge and added chrome pup rings...

Wish I still had the matching Edwards... : (

Re: The explorer thread.

saddly my only Explorer is a smashed up Epi Korina style... even after gluing the neck back together and the upper horn had to be glued too it sounds and plays good..... i finally bought a real case for it... i may throw a spare Duncan in the bridge Position and change out the stock plastic nut....

just because it's such a wreck, been saved, and still sounds good it kind of has a cool factor.... remember the days when a busted up guitar was trash...? lol

Re: The explorer thread.

I am making mine over right now, but here it was on the day I bought it:

I am going to gold ABR-1 hardware and keystones with gold open covers and gold bell knobs. Also have a custom made w/b/w cellulose nitrate pickguard on the way without the "cutaway" for the bridge post. And I will be putting a coat of Reranch black over the white. It will basically look like the black Epi '58 reissue with pickups that look like the ones in the Epi Blackback (and with gold bell knobs instead of black speed knobs). And then the black will wear and ding through to the original white finish. I might put white binding on the neck too.

Re: The explorer thread.

I have an 2011 Gibson explorer. I bought it because I wanted a change from my usual shred stick. It sounds massive. Even unplugged you can hear that thick mahogany girth. Also you can easily cover anything from blues to the heaviest death metal with it

Re: The explorer thread.

'85 Explorer with factory Kahler. Previous owner stripped it poorly and then poorly refinished it with some sort of furniture glaze.

I turned it into this mess:

Then sent it off to a friend to let him de-Kahler it and some mo' sheet:

That gold diamond sparkle is sick!

I miss my old cherry '76 RI Explorer. That was (alongside my ES-335) the best Gibson I've owned, even out of the custom shop pieces I've had. People don't credit them enough for the tone monsters that they are. I never knew there were Gibsons out there that had the lowend chunk of a Les Paul and a more immediate attack. Perfect balance and sustain for days. They may look like some sort of a wonky futurastic guitar, but they sound pretty killer.

Re: The explorer thread.

I would love to have been able to pick up Northwinds' purple E/2 CMT back when it was for sale. Anybody remember that?

Re: The explorer thread.

While this thread is not really making me regret selling that POS Slammer explorer/Hamer standard copy, it is making me gas a bit for an explorer...

argh.

priorities...I need to study!!!!!
