In an effort to make my Malmsteen Strat sound more beefy and chunky in the bridge I tried three different Duncan pickups over the weekend. The Custom Stack Plus, the Hot Stack Plus, and the JB Jr.
First I installed the Custom Stack Plus. Not thick enough. And it didn't sound as good as the SSL-5 it supposedly is modeled after. I decided no go on this one.
Second I tried the Hot Stack Plus. Wow! Very lively tone. Not dead at all. Quite thick and chunky. This was pretty much what I was looking for.
Third I couldn't help but try the JB Jr. This pickup also had a good chunky tone, but I could tell the highs had a more searing quality to them, probably cuz of the Ceramic Magnet. But I also noticed the pickup kind of had a buzzy tone, like Randy Rhoads guitar had on the first Blizzard of Ozz album.
The one I chose to stick with was the Hot Stack Plus.
Just in case anybody needs to hear some feedback on the pickup, I recommend it.
