howdy folks!

I just got the body from USA custom Guitars for my next project. It's basically a standard "modern" telecaster - alder body with maple neck/ rosewood fretboard.

I'm doing the finish on this myself - I was going to do a honeyburst, but after seeing Serdito's Project , I'm kind of inspired to do it in a transparent blue ...

anyway, it doesn't look like much yet, but we'll see how things go ...

Good luck Curly, That's a nice piece of alder ya got there. It has some
interesting grain to it. I'd say translucent blue will look sweet. :dance:

I have 2 Warmoth strats, and 1 tele. My first order was a carved top LPS tha's still hanging on my wall, waiting patiently for me to finish it.

I work for an engineering company, but the owner has another business - woodturning
I asked him if I could use his compressor to shoot my guitar, and he said I could use the compressor, his guns, and shoot it at work, which is terrific

you have to be crazy to build your own guitar, money wise, but it's easy to get hooked

It might be about time for us to admit we have a problem. :smack: :laugh2:

Seriously, though, it looks like it'll be a killer guitar when it's finished. Let me know your impression of the necks from USACG, and just your overall experience in general building with them. That handwritten note from Tommy included with your body looked like a VERY good sign.

well, I could have worse habits ..

as far as USACG, I've talked to Tommy a couple times on the phone, and I agree with a lot of his ideas about guitars ... he also caught a couple things on my order that could have been a problem later ... just a great guy who loves what he's doing, and is getting more and more business as the word speads ...

I'm already planning ahead for my next one ...

I'll probably have the neck in a couple weeks

Gary, that alder has such nice grain - it screams 3-tone burst to me. Check out Curtis Novak's Tele, then picture the dark border on the front being as thin as the border on the back of his. Just MHO.

hey, Chip!
well, I was planning on doing some kinda burst ... and Tommy told me that there was a mineral spot on the side that would make the body a candidate for a burst (it's really small - about an inch long).

months ago, I saw a bowl a guy turned in the woodturning center - it was tiger striped maple, looked like a soup dish with a 2" wide, flat lip. The lip was dyed blue and green and looked terrific to me ... Serdito's nice little strat project reminded me of that color ..

I love bursts, but there are so many that don't look so hot to me that it makes me want to do something more original ... but I was thinking about sort of "antiqueing" the edges a little ...

anyway, I've done a little more of my own work with each project, and doing the finish myself will be an adventure

well, you're one of the main inspirations around here, as far as the custom stuff goes!

but, no flames on this one

right now, I'm leaning toward doing a blue to black burst, but maybe have some veins of contrasting color that would match the grain patterns ... just an idea for now

Yeah, but the thing about it, Gary, is that you'll know exactly what that guitar is all about once you finish it.
These kits a person can buy....is the neck finished or does that have to be fretted and finished?
If you don't mind me for asking, what do ya figure you'll have into a guitar like this by the time you're done?

Aw it looks sweet.....and I am thinking about getting a tele, after I got the Wolfgang last year, I'm kinda digging two pickup guitars :laugh2:
Plus I could use one for more funky stuff

I wouldn't exactly call it a kit, but rather, a "guitar from parts" if you know what I mean ...

In round numbers, I'd say I'll have around $850 in it, including a decent hard case, and shipping costs. That's doing the finish myself. If you were to have someone do the finish, it would be another $250 - $400, depending on the finish.
