The Hype of the TubeScreamer

I want to know everyone's thoughts on the ibanez tubescreamer ( TS9, TS808 and TS9 mini)
Is the hype justified?

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

So many overdrives out there based on if not outright copying the Ibanez TS.... Things become classics for a reason.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

they do what they do well, sometimes thats a great thing! sometimes you want something else

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

I have the TS-9 and it works great for what I want it to do, as a clean boost in front of an overdriven tube amp. I'm curious to try other brands though like the OD808 etc, but for now it acts as the special ingredient to get me that beefy sound!

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

I don't think it's hype. It's not like it's discontinued and made with unobtanium. It's fairly cheap, widely available, fairly simple and predictable.

I love it, many others do.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

No hype, outstanding design. Signature mid hump that works so well with the Fender tonestack, amongst many others.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

For a strat or tele into a blackface Fender amp, I really like the TS808.

For a humbucking guitar into a crunchy Marshall, I prefer the MXR Classic OD, Zakk Wylde version, or Boss OD's.

After owning different tubescreamers, I decided to just own the benchmark when I spotted a pre owned TS808HW for way less than the $350 price tag.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

I wouldn't say there's much hype behind the TS. It's just a very good and very reliable design.

GJ, have you had much time to compare the Hardwired 808 and your other Tube Screamer flavored drives? You're pretty much the authority on them on the forum right now.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

I've always preferred the Sonic Distortion to TS, finding it more balanced, but never actually did a side-by-side comparrison.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

Hype is the wrong word.

It's a standard, or a classic, a staple if you will. Like a Fender Twin - it is what it is and does what it does, or a JCM 800, or a Les Paul.

Some guys need "craft" beer, or "artisanal" pretzels.

But dang, A Yuengling and some Snyder's pretzels just get the job done, every time. And at a solid price, like they have been doing for years.

It's a mid hump boost with some gain, but not a ton. Hard not to love. And of course, the Boss SD-1 is the other side of that equation.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

Why, it's all just corquesniffery, of course. /s

(one man's preference is another man's corquesniffery)

:naughty:

Ehh I'm too ruined for that to work any more :P But a TS is a great tone, compliments anything Fender quite well. Best way to get heavy in the mix with a Strat.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

You left out the TS-7.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

The TS-7 is pretty great.

I have a TS7 I really like and I have the (2) components to do a TS808 mod. I always thought "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" but I wonder if you modded yours. The only downside is that it's a bit bulky and the switch takes time to get used to (ime, YMMV).

I never modded mine. The main downside was that the switch was touchy.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

It might just be the perfect 'all rounder' OD for live gigs. It's a seriously problem solver. It adds gain and musical compression, while shelving the lows so your sound doesn't get too flubby and cutting highs so your treble doesn't make your audience's ears bleed, all while adding a huge chunk of mids that audibly cut through the mix without really adding any unpleasant levels of volume for the mix guy to deal with.

I honestly get why a bunch of guys hate TS style pedals for home use, but at gigging volume it's solid and just solidly works. There are a ton of really good sounding cheap clones on the market too, EHX has the East River, the Mooer Green Mile, the Digitech Bad Monkey (known to be notably good for the price, though no longer sold new) and Ibanez themselves have a little mini-TS now for fairly cheap, so there's no reason not to grab one and mess around with it for a while. Even if you don't end up loving the sound, it's one of those sounds that's so 'classic' to modern rock, blues and metal that it's worth messing around with.

Re: The Hype of the TubeScreamer

First of all, I have always said the TS-7 is a TS-9 for all practical purposes. The hot switch is great. I understand the foot switches die. Bah - buy three TS-7's. They are cheap.
