The Jack White sound.

Re: The Jack White sound.

His tone in this song sounds like a West Virginia vibrator (2 liter bottle filled with angry bees to make it vibrate),

That, more than likely IS that 3 pickup Airline gutar in the vid...same twin/silvertone and lots of Big Muff...it is after all a fuzz tone...

A big poart of his crunch/fuzzy tone are the real cheep Jensen C10R's that are in those Silvertone cabs...those are weak/fart speakers and if you crank the amp and hit it with a Big Muff they just completely fuzz out...

Re: The Jack White sound.

Now that is an interesting sound. It is kind of harpsichord like.

The POG can produce several octaves at the same time w/o any tracking issues...Jack dials in one below and one above at the same time so you get those 2 as well as the octave he is actually playing for 3 parts...they are neat but not cheep!

Check out this clip of the POG in use and listen to all the wild stuff it can do...I know you're not a pedal guy Dave but just watch it...it won't take long!

Oh yeah, I remember that thing now. I have seen that clip before and that is a neat toy!

Re: The Jack White sound.

Alright guys, this is the plan :

- Dropping my next paycheck into a whammy and a big muff ( both the same models as jack uses, going to do some research)

- Then im going to looks through the spare parts boxes of the techs I know, and pick out a few old rusted/busted/abuses/shaddy looking humbucker. After having those in hand, I will alternate dropping them in an old and epiphone dot that I have somewhere around.

- As far as amp goes, I have a 65w SS piece of crap that my friend just lent to me. Im going to use that for now, if not, I'll just turn the mod knob on my windsor to " A-class", caus that makes it sound like crap.

So what do you guys think? Am I all set?

Re: The Jack White sound.

oh and BTW, you have the wrong pic in your avatar. Try their first album (White Stripes). ;)

I really like " Get behind me Satan", even if it doesnt have the guitar rocking vibe as much as the other ones. I just picked that one, caus I thought it was one of their better looking pics.

Re: The Jack White sound.

I was goofing around the other day, connected a practice amp to an old speaker cabinet from a long gone stereo (two 8's and two little tweeters), stuck my Tweak Fuzz in front, and nailed the "Dead Leaves & the Dirty Ground" tone.

Dude, that sounds sick. Great tone.

I think my facination with the jack white sound is not about to go away. It's refreshing in a day of millions of pedals and digital effects.

Or PRS's through Rectumfriers. YUCK!

Better have a large paycheck on the way!

Jack uses an original WH-1 Whammy Pedal...IMO NONE of the reissues come close, the WH-4 "reissue" is the closest but it's still a world away IMO and yes I have tried both. The ONLY down side to an original WH-1 is the price...they go for between $500 or so and up to close to a grand depending on contidion and how many can be had at any given time.

As for the Big Muff I have seen pics of Jack with both the older Green Russian Big Muff's from the 90's (which are KILLER BTW) as well as the newer MIA Big Muff reissues and I want to say he may even have one or 2 vintage Muffs from the 70's but Im not sure.

Re: The Jack White sound.

Alright, so after reading for the last hour, I think I'm going to have to read more on the whammy issue before pulling the trigger on something.

The big muff though, I want. Before I go off and buy it, are there some pro's and cons I should know about?

The new MIA Muffs are great units but if you;re not getting an old 70's/80's Big Muff my favorite are the green made in Russia Big Muffs; from the early Sovtek era...I have owned several Big Muff pedals over the years and the one I kept is my green MIR Big Muff...The price on them is getting kind of high IMO but I still think that they ar worth it. If you can swing an old one go for it...all of the old ones have their own thing going on and there has been a dozen or more small shanges made to the Big Muff over the years but one thing stays the same...they are all cool boxes!

Re: The Jack White sound.

What about a Duncan Phat Cat? AFAIK, the pups in his Airliner are no humbuckers they are humbucker sized single coils - like the Phat Cat, a P90 should get you close to his sound.

I think that a bug percent of his tone comes from just experimenting with gear, riffs, etc... start buying weird guitar gear - and it would get you into the door. Electro Harmonix Big Muff would work well for it, other EH effects should also get you to weird-tone-land... find no-name POS pedals and guitars, try ZVex if you want to spend big money... get into an experimental mood with gear - and you might be there (or even do better).

Re: The Jack White sound.

See that experimental mood is what appeals to me also. I think what I will do firstly is get some sort of big muff. That video link was SICK! ( in a good way:naughty:)

I think this might be the start of a great tonal journey.

Re: The Jack White sound.

Off topic - I was in an independent movie with him before he got big....he was upholstering furniture for a living. Nice guy, or at least he was then, haven't seen him for quite a while. My name is right above his in the credits: http://imdb.com/title/tt0345683/ You definitely gotta respect somebody who achieves such a huge level of success doing things their own way the way he has.

Re: The Jack White sound.

I heard about that. It's very very cool that you got to play in that movie with a guy that became so big. Very cool.

Re: The Jack White sound.

After having heard him play live with Meg at bluesfest last week, I have developped a facination with Jack White's guitar sound. There is just something about it that gets to me in a good way.

Does anybody know if there is a SD pickup that could help me get that sound. Not a perfect imitation, but just something similar, so I can have fun with it.

Huge White Stripes fan here . . .

. . . what you want to try is the humbucker size single coil pu from Eastwood !
Look it up on their site ! It is at the top, under "extras" or something like that !

LOVE THE TONE HE GOT ON THE NEW ALBUM !!!! :14:

Cheers
