The Jack White sound.

Re: The Jack White sound.

Come to think of it, that is soooo perfect.

So lets say pickups is not the solution for that dirty and rough low distortion/overdrive....is there something out there that could help me? A pedal perhaps?

Almost any Eastwood guitar with their very oen special S/C'ers in a bucker cover, into a Micro Amp, into a Whammy, into a Big Muff, into a POG, into a big Fender amp loaded with Jensen speakers turned to 12, with a healthy helping of reverb on the amp !

Re: The Jack White sound.

IIRC Airline was a Ward's brand. It's funny, I started with equipment like that, except for the whammy, and I was glad to move on. With cheap guitars, you have tuning and playing issues that aren't as romantic as they may seem. But, as Page showed with the Danelectro's, sometimes there is a tone that nothing else produces.

Re: The Jack White sound.

The POG can produce several octaves at the same time w/o any tracking issues...Jack dials in one below and one above at the same time so you get those 2 as well as the octave he is actually playing for 3 parts...they are neat but not cheep!

Check out this clip of the POG in use and listen to all the wild stuff it can do...I know you're not a pedal guy Dave but just watch it...it won't take long!

Hey, for $350 odd bucks at MF, that POG is not too badly priced ! :)

Ofcourse it can always be cheaper, but it is NOT a rip-off either !

I am orderring my POG in the next 4 weeks !

Right now, my set-up looks like this :

IBANEZ AG75 (full hollow - with TVJones Megna'Tron neck p/u) into . . .

* EHX LPB-1 (i replaced my Mirco Amp with it, 'cause i like the LPB's tone more)

* Digitch Whammy

* EHX Double Muff (it replaced my Big Muff, as i prefer the tone of the Double much more)

* EHX Stereo Pulsar

. . . into a stock Fender Blues Jr (but it is getting a Private Jack sp swop soon - or maybe a Jensen !)

Next purchace is a VoodooLab SUPERFUZZ !!!!

Wiyh my rig, i can get a very good representaion of the White Stripes and Black keys, with my very own twist added to the mix.

Right now, i am trying to do the same to the "Jon Spencer Blues Explosion" tone !

Hope this helped !

Re: The Jack White sound.

Update on my quest for the jack white sound.

I went to the store to pick up a fuzzbox/overdrive/distortion to get the jack white sound. Ended up walking out of there with a big muff pi. I know I know, it's the same thing he uses, but I did match it up against 5 other options, and it really did produce the sound I wanted. I'll be playing for a few days, and I'll try and review it.

Re: The Jack White sound.

After having heard him play live with Meg at bluesfest last week, I have developped a facination with Jack White's guitar sound. There is just something about it that gets to me in a good way.

Does anybody know if there is a SD pickup that could help me get that sound. Not a perfect imitation, but just something similar, so I can have fun with it.

I have not read a single reply to your question...yet, but here is my answer :

Even though he uses the minimal amount of equipment, you will be every hard pressed to cop his tone even 90%. :saeek:

The pick ups is only part of his sig tone !

The big factors acording to my ears (...remember, i have not seen them live, except for the DVD !) is :

* Fiber Glass semi hollow guitar (they call it res-o-glass)
* SINGLE COIL PU's - thats right, those are S/C'ers hiding under a humbucker cover - fact !
* EHX Big Muff (modded ? still not sure about that one)
* Whammy, even just being in the chain contributes to the tone some what !
* MXR Micro Amp (his 'secret weapon' if you ask me !)
* Fender Twin Reverb with vol knob at 12 !!!

Getting back to your question though !

The only humbucker that might help you is the SD Phat Cat (not really a 'bucker !)

I would look into a bassy/mid heavy S/C bridge PU in a very bright guitar, to copy the acoustic qualities of his "plastic" guitar's unpluged tone !

I have seen many so-called White Stripes "tribute bands" - one worst than the other, but the few who almost nailed the tone atleast, was using either a stock HighWay One Tele or a (stock as far as i know) Fender Jaguar.
The Jag being the better one, tone wise !

Hope this helped !

Good Luck
James
