the love I lost: the one(s) that got away

Earlier this year, I had to sell my long-time number 1, a '77 LP Triumph. Man, I loved that bass.
The local shop owner I went to knew he had me over a barrel, and he didn't even buy me dinner.
That's not all. I had a '74 Precision that I modded into a 5-string fretless.
If I played the right spot just past the end of the neck, I could fool everyone into thinking it was a standup.
That went to a guy who said he'd "hold it for me", and if I wanted it back, just return his money. Unfortunately, not gonna happen.

What are your debbie-downers?

Never a bass but I'm kinda kicking myself for selling my Peavey Windsor head. She sounded super sweet with a clean tone and then add some dirt on top of her, but she was sitting in my parents garage unused for the better part of two years now, so I sold her for $200. She'll make somebody else happy.

Re: the love I lost: the one(s) that got away

At one point I bought a late 70s Hondo Longhorn DOUBLE NECK 4 string and 8 string bass, with the craziest paintjob I'd ever seen. Played it for a summer in the house band at an amusement park. After about a year of it hanging out in its case under my bed, I took it in to a local music store to see what I could get. Ended up trading it for a rack case and some really nice speaker cables; all of which I do not have any more.

It wasn't practical. It weighed about 18-19 lbs and was unwieldy. I still should've kept it.

I have two:

1: My limited edition 2004 Gibson Les Paul Studio. 1 of 250 made. I had to sell it even though I didn't want to. I wish I could get it back or one like it. This guitar was special and is the guitar responsible for making me spend more time on guitar and less on bass.

2: My 2005 Music Man Sub bass. I recorded a lot of music and played a lot of shows with this bass. I later tried to replace it with different active basses but there was something special about this bass. I should have never sold it.

Mine is not a bass either, but I had the best sounding Jackson Soloist (SL3) that I have picked up, this one was a real gem. A clumsy music pastor broke the neck. Being a neck thru the repair was way out of my price range. In hindsight I wish I had kept it and gotten it fixed rather than selling "giving" it away.

Mine is a Rickenbacker that got stolen while my best friend had custody of it.

Re: the love I lost: the one(s) that got away

I had an Ibanez fretless P-bass copy that I had modified with stacked pots and routed to add a SD Jazz pickup. It was black with a maple neck—and inspired by a photo I saw of Phil Lynott, I also had a chrome mirror-finish pickguard swapped out from the white one that came with it.

It was just about perfect and I loved playing it. I didn't play it as much as my other (fretted) bass, so instead of keeping it in the case, I ended up selling it to a college kid who put it to good use.
